A bill which would outlaw gay conversion therapy passed its preliminary hearing in the Knesset Wednesday afternoon.
The bill, which was drafted by MK Nissan Horowitz (Meretz), would ban the controversial practice of treating homosexuals with the aim of reversing same-sex attraction.
In its preliminary vote, the 120-member Knesset backed the bill by a margin of 42 to 36, after the coalition split, with Blue and White backing the proposed law, while haredi lawmakers and the Likud opposed it - with the exception of Likud minister Amir Ohana.
After the vote, haredi lawmakers fumed at Blue and White chief and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz for endorsing the bill, threatening not to back him when he rotates in as prime minister midway through the government’s three-year term.
"We won't cooperate with Blue and White. But the Likud government was also a disappointment," said MK Moshe Gafni (United Torah Judaism). "Where was Prime Minister Netanyahu? And why did Amir Ohana vote in favor," Gafni continued, referring to the Likud Internal Security minister, who is openly homosexual. "Are they considering us at all?"
But haredi lawmakers also slammed Prime Minister Netanyahu for failing to enforce the coalition agreement – which bars coalition members from supporting laws not backed by the ministerial committee for legislation – effectively enabling Blue and White to back the bill.
“If the Likud isn’t able to muster a majority against [the bill] on an issue that is so important to the haredi public, he is lost," said Deputy Minister Meir Porush (United Torah Judaism).
If the bill is passed in all its Knesset votes, therapists who perform conversion therapy could face not only fines and the loss of professional accreditation, but also jail time.

Being born male is a choice, but being born gay is congenital?
Yeah, you change change anything -— your actual sex, your gender identity or expression, your sex role, your sexual anatomy -— but not being gay. That’s hard-wired into your essence for eternity.

It is possible that they were ‘born this way’ because we are born sinners - ever since Adam. Because we were ‘born this way’ does not mean that it is right or that someone has to stay that way. Others may be born with a tendency toward alcohol, drugs, adultery,...
Again ‘bbtw’ is not an excuse to stay that way, we can change - just choose, work toward, and by God’s grace and strength change into what is best.
I was born a liar, thief, greedy, probably born lazy, dependent on others,... I don’t have to stay that way and by God’s grace I can change. Regarding lazy - I changed because of outside influences: Dad and Mom, examples around me, a demanding boss and coaches, wanting to make something of my life, a maturing process, [not wanting to stay in my parents’ basement, :-)] But it all started on the inside when the Father gave me a ‘new heart’.

What about converting heteros to homosexuality, or homos to trans, as J.K. Rowling has asked?
You can be born with a passionate desire to ram your dingaling up other men’s butts or in their mouths, or accept other men’s wangs rammed into those orifices. But that doesn’t mean you have to do it. Or that if you did it once, you have to keep doing it. You can live a monogamous, heterosexual lifestyle, or be celibate, despite those urges. No need to convert to a heterosexual in order to simply not act on homosexual desires.

If a gay individual wants to undergo conversion therapy, I can't imagine why their choice should be criminalized. Gays aren't being rounded up and put in camps for conversion. At least not in Israel, or the US.
I know this is Israel, but what right is there to ban such counseling?

No one is forcing this. Unless they’re upset about parents trying to help their children.
All parties have the right to do what they wish. The only thing to block is any alleged physical force that might go on.
Definitely right. But I’d add that if not a choice (which I largely doubt, except in these insane days), it is a defect they’re born with. It should be recognized as such, and not something to “celebrate”, but to fight and overcome. Certainly no more than “don’t act on it”.

I used to run the Homosexual Agenda Ping list.
The vast majority of homosexuals were molested when young by older homosexuals. IOW they were made, not born. One third of all child molestation, approximately, is same sex. the first “Gay Rights” platform had a long list of demands, one of which was the elimination of ALL age of consent laws.
Another point is that there is an undercurrent in the homosexual “community” of extreme violence, sadism and the like. Many in the Nazi party in Germany were homosexuals.
