Well, they didn’t exactly “get rid” of the Senators. The Senators moved to Texas and became the Texas Rangers, because the owner moved the team.

I think there were at least two versions of the Senators. One of them moved to Minnesota and became the Twins. The Rangers may have been the second (expansion) edition that was established after the first one left.
