In January 1974 the USAF used an experimental vaccine for a cold virus, an Adenovirus, on 1000 troops at Lackland AFB. Testing for the vaccine was thorough but still had a couple of items to be examined. Right after the USAF administered the vaccine to the troops, virologists discovered that the vaccine had an "Onc" gene that caused severe tumors in lab animals. Vaccines are important but testing needs to be thorough before they are used. I learned of this incident in an advanced virology class at the University of Tennessee from one of the virologists that was involved with the study.
