Early Friday morning the statue of Christopher Columbus was removed from the park bearing his name in the City of Buffalo.
The Federation of Italian American Societies of WNY had the statue removed. Crews were working to remove the statue around 5 a.m. The organization said they removed the statue to provide an example of peaceful change in the community.
The Federation requested that ownership of the statue be given to them. It will be relocated to somewhere that the Federation will determine at a later date. The group also asked that the space the statue previously stood be reserved for a memorial honoring Italian American heritage and that the name of Columbus Park be changed to something honoring Italian heritage. In addition to those requests, the Federation also asked that October be recognized as Italian American Heritage Month and the second Monday of that month, which is when Columbus Day is traditionally observed, as Italian Heritage Day.
Mayor Byron Brown said he had already talked with members of the city's common council and they will be bringing forward legislation to rename the park and to replace the statue with a symbol of Italian Heritage.

I read somewhere that there is a city in Ohio that has declared itself a “sanctuary city” for these unwanted statues. Maybe they should ship it there.
It has been vandalized with red paint and there were multiple protests.

This is great. Italian lives matter.
So do Irish, German, English, Polish, etc. This is a great way to push back against the narrative.
How do we go from George Floyd’s death to Columbus statue coming down? .3% of the population is running everyone to ground. A group of juvenile delinquents are sticking it to everyone. November 3,2020 is payback day or maybe sooner. Bernie Getz where have u gone. Joe DiMaggio forget about it fellow Italians just relegated Columbus to the dustbin of history. Pathetic another myth shot in the butt.
They could have put an iron fence around it and concertina wire within the fencing.

Shame, a symbol of pride for hispanics, cristians and italians, removed.
At a time of ignorance, when a large portion of the population still thought of the earth as flat, Columbus went on daring voyage of discovery seeking to find another route to China.
Although driven by Christian fervor to ‘convert’ the indigenous populations he found backing for the expedition as a way to find another route to reach china.
He went into the unknown and he and his crew almost perished in the process. More than anything he represents dreams of discovery, courage and adventure.
He paved the way for our own daring voyages of Discovery to the Moon and Mars.
Now why is he being targeted? Because he was white? because he is the most famous of those that located the American continent?
Now all the ills that came onto the indigenous populations of America are laid upon him. What do those have anything to do with him? He never even set a foot on the continent! he just found and settled some islands.
Shame! Shame! on the City council.
