I’M A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF 13 REVOLUTIONARY PATRIOTS. DEPORT LUCIAN TRUSCOTT.

Fascinating news from The New York Times this week! Reviewing its op-ed titled “I’m a Direct Descendant of Thomas Jefferson. Take Down His Memorial,” I gather we now weigh Americans’ opinions based on who their ancestors are.

I’m not sure that’s a good idea, but the rules are the rules. Otherwise, why would the Times consider it so important to publish Lucian Truscott, a great-great-great-great-great-grandson of Jefferson, at all?

Blut uber alles!

Obviously, we’re going to need a list of Whose Opinion Matters. Here’s my first stab at it:

Descendants of John Adams will have their views count the most. Adams was a giant of the Revolution, our second president, and never owned slaves.

Descendants of George Washington will come next. Some will bicker with this, inasmuch as he is the father of our country, but based on our new standards, he gets demerits for owning slaves — though, unlike Jefferson, at least he freed them on his death. (This is a freebie: Washington’s only child was the United States of America.)

Someone else can fill in the middle range in the Whose Opinion Matters ranking — this is taking a while.

Toward the bottom of the list will be descendants of slave traders, then of slave owners, and below that, descendants of slave owners who pretend to be embarrassed about that fact, but are just bragging, like Truscott.

I wish someone would write “finis” to the idea that Jefferson fathered a child by Sally Hemmings. Unfortunately, that has become a “political” truth, which cannot now be denied, regardless of its probable falseness.

I hadn’t read any of that Thomas Jefferson really wasn’t the father of Sally Hemings youngest son stuff before.

Liberals aren’t rational enough to understand this.

I would sort of like to know if any of mine were in the Revolution. A good chance but don’t know.

Three of my Great Grandfathers fought for the Confederacy and I am proud of them. The Forth was a Methodist circuit rider who spent at least two years at a Confederate camp.

The study which supposedly showed that Jefferson fathered Sally Hemings' children was published just before the 1998 midterm election--apparently the publication date was moved up. Of course that was right in the middle of the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal. As I recall, one of the descendants had DNA that suggested descent from one of Jefferson's nephews surnamed Carr (who had been suspected by Jefferson relatives as possibly fathering one or more of Sally's children).

Besides the DNA article, there was Fawn Brodie's book about Jefferson, and much earlier, an 1873 newspaper article in Ohio based on information from Madison Hemings, one of Sally's children, in which Madison alleged that Jefferson was his father. Also, the 1870 census (of course not made public until much later) shows that the census taker wrote next to Madison Hemings' name "This man is the son of Thomas Jefferson" (obviously having been told that by Madison).

Only one of my four grandparents had ancestors who were living in the United States at the time of the Revolutionary War, but he had at least one ancestor who fought in the American Revolution--in fact that was mentioned in the ancestor's obituary which miraculously survived (he was living in rural Virginia and the obituary appeared in a newpaper published a couple of counties away). The obituary calls him "one of the fathers of our freedom."

If any of your relatives ever joined the DAR or the SAR, it may be possible to identify an ancestor who either served in the Revolution or at least supported it ("Patriotic Service" such as taking an oath of allegiance or supplying beef to the army, etc.). If you know the names of any ancestors who were alive and the right age at the time of the Revolution, try to find them in the DAR database.

There are records of the rumor going back to 1802. In 1811, a school headmaster who visited Jefferson wrote in his diary that day, "The story of black Sal is no farce—That he cohabits with her and has a number of children by her is a sacred truth—and the worst of it is he keeps the same children slaves—an unnatural crime which is very common in these parts."

Hadn’t heard of that diary entry. Sally was apparently the half-sister of Jefferson long-dead wife. I think all of her children were freed in his will, but not Sally herself.

The DAR site has a search page for patriots.

If you know who your ancestors were during that time you can search.

You can use ancestry.com to find out if you don’t know.
