Trump and (mexico's) Lopez Obrador will talk long-term solution to illegal immigration....(Today)....
washingtonexaminer. ^ | 7/7/2020 | Anna Giaritelli, Homeland Security Reporter

“The historic work that both of these administrations — led by the two presidents — have done stemming from one, the USMCA, which is something that we are going to obviously highlight … but also our historic cooperation on migration" a official told reporters.

“Illegal migration is now down 85% of mostly from Central American countries that would not be possible without the help of President Lopez Obrador with the Migrant Protection plan that we worked together on and the 25,000 National Guardsmen men and women that he has put forward to the northern and southern borders to protect people from coming illegally,” ... “Now, based on the relationship between these two presidents and being able to stem the short-term flow of illegal migration and protect people's lives, we're now able to build upon that and have long-term impact with private sector-led growth in southern Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.”

"One of the things that's an obsession of President Lopez Obrador is,... 'OK, now that we’ve cut the short-term, issue of illegal migration then how do we ensure to deal with the root causes of that migration so that those families can find not only employment opportunities but jobs, access to basic needs, wage growth, and competitiveness in their countries and in their communities in particular,"

The White House will host a dinner after the talks... Ten Mexican CEOs, 10 top U.S. CEOs, delegations, and Cabinet members will attend the dinner at the White House.

"Usually, the official working visits do not have a dinner component," said an official. "This visit does because it, in fact, is a special relationship with a special dinner, and we wanted to make sure that President Lopez Obrador felt welcome in his first trip outside Mexico."

“How about we build a big beautiful wall & you keep your people on your side of the wall?”

Every doper I’ve ever met was a democrat. So how about we stop supporting Mexican drug cartels so that Mexico’s economy can develop normally.

The unstated reason for a lot of illegal immigration is the drug use by, primarily rich white liberals that has destroyed Mexican sovereignty and culture. Criminality is not culture. Yes, build the wall, but rub liberal’s noses in the tragedy their drug lust has created.

A sealevel canal along Mexico's southern border would make a great national project...

There’s no illegal immigration problem from Mexico. NAFTA solved all that by improving the Mexican economy so much that Mexicans stopped coming to the USA to look for work. I remember NAFTA proponents saying that would happen.

Those same folks also said capitalism, trade and membership in the WTO would turn the communist Chinese into freedom loving democrats.

Mexico’s president should be happy and ready for further cooperation.

I read that japanese car companies in Mexico decided that 16$/hr was cheaper than moving the entire factory to the USA, so they decided to keep their factories in Mexico, and to meet the USMCA agreement provisions, INCREASE THE WORKERS WAGES BY A FACTOR OR THREE!

Incredible. And even though the factory remains in Mexico, I think it is a win win. Workers will remain in Mexico and prosper. I hope it has a trickle down effect and raises wages elsewhere.

A lot of people on FR don’t realize this, but Mexico doesn’t want thousands of Cuban smuggler imported people (from Central America, South America, China, the ME) trekking through their country. They also don’t want to lose their young and entrepreneurial population to the US. I’ve been to Mexico a lot and while they always blame us for “luring” their population, they know it’s because their own country is corrupt and dysfunctional and there’s no future there.

AMLO is a raving socialist, but he actually seems to be trying to do something about this.

Not a bad idea. Install a desalination plant, a water purification plant. Would provide irrigation and drinking water. ... Just do it on the USA Mexico border. Hell, could even provide electricity. Very interesting idea.

I made that suggestion years ago but didn't receive any response, you will get at least one. {:-)

It did convince most of the people just not the party.

Thanks, I was enjoying the cricket noise before, but your response is much better and more gratifying.
Years ago, here on FR, I found out another FReeper had been advocating for connecting the Qattara Depression with the Mediterranean (lots of people have over the past 100-200 years), but with the extra kicker that the reduction in worldwide sealevel due to filling the QD would counteract the melting of all the ice in Greenland. A) it wouldn't (not even close, as it turned out), and B) all the ice in Greenland shows no sign of melting into the oceans.

Hire the American team building the wall to also build one on Mexico’s southern border.
