In the early 80s I had the pleasure of seeing John Hammond in a studio recording at WEDU in Tampa, FL for a PBS broadcast. Free tickets for a studio audience of 100, first come, first served. Soon as I saw the announcement I hopped in the car and drove 40 miles to the station because you had to ask for them in person.
