There was a vote in 1860-1865 that settled most of these issues.

The left will figure out a way to do it, whether it’s this election or the next. They have no opposition.

99% of the territory of D.C. should be split up between the two bordering states (Maryland and Virginia) from which it was originally carved.

The remaining 1% (encompassing actual govt. buildings like the White House and the Capitol) should remain federalized.

Problem solved.

Regards,

If DC became a state it would probably be bankrupt from the date of its inception. Interestingly, this COVID-19 outbreak will throw a monkey wrench into a lot of these discussions when people grow up and start looking at the financial ramifications of these silly decisions.

“They have no opposition.”

Seems that way. Notice there is no discussion about why DC is not a state. The ignorant do not to be educated by the power mongers.

That was to prevent a state from LEAVING “The Union”

Not anything about a state splitting into 2 states.

States Rights were promised when they joined “The Union” and then were denied. That was the real issue- Slavery was just a case-in-point.

Wouldn’t this require an amendment to the Constitution?

Who would want it?

The question of secession has not been raised. How does the Civil War have anything to do with this?

Same with NY. BOTH have large red areas, who are out voted by a few counties.

Notice there is no discussion about why DC is not a state

The Rs are too busy. They're preparing for Trump's reelection by studying the tax code to see if they can make a permanent corporate tax cut the centerpiece of his campaign. That should light a fire under the base.

True.Virginia and Maryland are already lost due to so many government paycheck recipients. On second thought,I'd say give them all to Maryland because Virginia,I suspect, just might be salvageable.

“But what if a Democrat is elected to the White House this November, and the party wins a majority in the Senate, while keeping the House?”

If that happens then not only would DC statehood be one of our least concerns but it would become unnecessary.

If the GOP wins the all three branches should pass a bill returning the populated part of DC back to Maryland, and just keep the Federal Mall, Capital Hill White House area as DC.

The problem with that scenario is that the constitution gives DC three electoral votes. Under your scenario, the registered voters living in the White House would have three electoral votes all to themselves.

Does that leave enough of a physical buffer to protect the federal government buildings?
