Fred Ashmore rented a Mustang GT, crammed it full of fuel tanks, and drove from New York City to Los Angeles in under 26 hours, shattering the solo Cannonball record.

I wonder how the car rental company feels about this, LOL.
I remember being told, years ago, “Nothing goes over bumps like a rental car.”
Same idea.

“The Mustang GT will not go any faster than 159 miles per hour,” he told Road & Track. “Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.”...

If you’re carrying more than a thousand pounds of fuel maybe.
I don’t know actually, not a big Mustang fan.

Waiting for someone to try this by swapping out Tesla Roadsters batteries.

That’s good all the way through. The punchline caps it.

Top speed in a straight line is not affected by weight. The time it takes to get there, yes.

How much did they benefit from less traffic due to Covid-19?

Weight is a factor in acceleration (F= m x a) but not in top speed. For a given amount of power, top speed is all about aero.

Quite a bit. Course the traffic is coming back closer to normal.

Reminds me of the stories of people renting the Hertz Shelby Mustangs and welding in roll cages and racing them and taking them back Monday morning.

Yup. And the only true off-road vehicle is a rental car.

I read a story recently, don’t know how true it is but this guy needed new tires for his car, so he rented a car with same size tires, then he switched them, took the rental back the next day.
New set of tires for $39.95.

theres a lot of debate on this subject about what kind of car handles best. Some say a front-engined car; some say a rear-engined car. I say a rented car. Nothing handles better than a rented car. You can go faster, turn corners sharper, and put the transmission into reverse while going forward at a higher rate of speed in a rented car than in any other kind. You can also park without looking, and can use the trunk as an ice chest. Another thing about a rented car is that its an all-terrain vehicle. Mud, snow, water, woods you can take a rented car anywhere. True, you cant always get it back but thats not your problem, is it?...
