Afghans accuse Taliban of killing 333 people as U.S. pulls thousands of troops out

Almost 900 Afghan security personnel and 150 civilians were killed or wounded in a wave of Taliban attacks across Afghanistan last week. The insurgents' onslaught made for the deadliest week in the history of the 19-year conflict, but it hasn't stopped the government, the insurgents, or the U.S. from pushing publicly for a peace deal.

The Afghan government accused the Taliban of carrying out 422 attacks over just seven days, leaving 291 Afghan National Defense and Security forces dead and 550 more wounded. In the same period, the insurgents are accused of killing 42 civilians, including women and children, and wounding 105 others.

The government's unusual release of official casualty figures for security forces appeared to be aimed at highlighting the surge in Taliban assaults as the U.S. moves forward with a military withdrawal long promised by President Donald Trump.

In the autumn of 2019 Russia acted as intermediary in negotiations between the Taliban and the US. That September, a Taliban delegation arrived in Moscow to meet with the Russian president’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov. On this occasion, the parties noted that Russia and the Taliban were “on the same side of the barricades” in these negotiations, and the representative of the Russian foreign ministry, Maria Zakharova, declared that “a complete curtailment of foreign military presence is an essential condition for sustainable peace in Afghanistan” (Nezavisimaya Gazeta, September 15, 2019).

The United States began to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan following the February 29, 2020, signing of a peace agreement, which was officially supported by Russia (Mid.ru, March 2). US experts suggest that the withdrawal of forces will lead to the strengthening of the Taliban, the aggravation of the civil war, and the growth of the trans-border terrorist threat emanating from Afghanistan (Rand.org, January 21, 2019).

I hate to say it but that number is going far north than 333.

The Afghan government should have known they had a window to liquidate the Taliban and the Haqqani by “doing their villages” but they dragged their feet.

Part of it was Obama’s State Dept trying to nation build. There was only one solution to Afghanistan: sell the village elders on a vision or kill them all.

That is the only thing that motivates them.

The media is determined to keep us in Afghanistan until we have pacified it so the /Chinese can take it over at minimal cost.

Our media will do anything and everything it can to please it’s master.

The question is why is there such a thing as Taliban after 911?

Should be zero Taliban.

Obama was just a bit player in all this. The looming failures in Afghanistan and Iraq are all on George W. Bush. Obama, and now Trump, are just playing the bad hands that were dealt them.

Don’t let W skate. This terrible mess is on him. Just as Vietnam is on LBJ. Nixon, and then Ford, were just the bit players in that tragedy.

I was in Afghanistan during Barkey, not Bush. The 82nd Airborne had no fight in them, and the State Dept was pussy-footing with the Afghan govt.

We couldn't even drink beer on a US base because of the cucks as State. They were worried about offending, when they should have empowered the 82nd to slaughter.

Advocates of our continuing to pour blood and treasure into this mess remind me of the liberals in Russia in 1917 continuing to fight a meaningless war while the Bolsheviks schemed at home.
