Trump Looking to Replace $600 Unemployment Benefit With Back-to-Work Bonus

Donald Trump is looking to replace the $600 a week Pandemic Unemployment Benefit with a back-to-work bonus that will incentivize working for many of the 30 million people currently receiving the enhanced benefit. The benefit is set to expire July 31 and Democrats want to expand it into next year.

A study done by the Federal Reserve found that the federal unemployment benefit was making it difficult for companies to hire workers as the economy reopens following the lockdown.

Barrons:

Even though the unemployment rate is expected to register over 20% for May in the jobs report the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release June 5, employers reported difficulty in hiring during the severe economic contraction resulting from the coronavirus shutdown.

“Contacts cited challenges in bringing employees back to work, including workers’ health concerns, limited access to childcare, and generous unemployment insurance benefits,” the Beige Book summary said.

That $600 a week is on top of state unemployment benefits that some states have also expanded. The bottom line is, workers are asking themselves why go back when I’m making more money sitting at home?

In particular, the various Fed districts noted the impact of expanded unemployment benefits, including the extra $600 a week under the Cares Act.

“Some businesses have already made efforts to recall laid off workers, as well as hire new workers. A number of these firms noted that this has been challenging, with many unemployed workers reluctant to return to work—some attributed this to generous unemployment benefits, as well as safety concerns,” according to the New York Fed.

$600 a week MAYBE made sense at the time, but it doesn’t now.

I can’t see going back to zero, however. There’s still 18 million people who are out of work who had jobs in February. They aren’t all just lazy.

Which this is bullcrap? Cutting the $600 bucks, or giving people a bonus to go off relief?

This whole thing was done completely bass ackwards to begin with. If there was to be a stimulus,( lets pretend the stimulus had to happen), the $1200 one time payment should have went to those that lost their job. The $600/week bonus should have been to those essential workers that still had to go out everyday and expose themselves to the virus. It should have been a combat pay style bonus. The unemployed were relatively safe from exposure due to staying at home. Why did they need extra money on top of unemployment benefits?

Now the supreme idiocy of the way it was handled has manifested itself in that people want another bonus to return to work, and yet again, those of us that troopered on and kept the economy alive get the royal screw job! EFF Steve Mnuchin and Eff Trump too!

How about just drop the $600 benefit? That should provide the only incentive people would need to get a job.

600 never made sense. 300 did. 200 does now.

There are a million driving and delivering jobs out there. Don’t like it? Tough luck

More like the employees are using their “safety concerns” as an excuse so that they can keep collecting their unemployment bonuses.

I hope they all $#!+ as brick when they find out they will have to pay taxes on their unemployment money come next April 15th!

That’s $2400 per month plus whatever other benefits you were entitled to under your state’s laws. Who would want to give up that gravy train unless it’s $2400 per month plus salary to go back to work? If you want people to go back to work, end, or greatly reduce, the extra unemployment money. No incentive-to-return money is needed.

Trump sees... as do many who understand psychology and economics... that the $600 on top of anything else you might get is disincentivizing work and also funding insurrection.

Unemployment benefits are largely a joke, even before the covid nonsense... However, if you can’t work because the government won’t let you????????? What do you do?

Not that it matters, even before COVID nonsense, from initial filing to actually getting anything is up to 7 weeks in most states.. with Corona shutdowns overwhelming the system, a lot of folks are going months before they see anything... so its not like they system worked before this crap in most places.

Particularly if you are someone who is living paycheck to paycheck, which unfortunately most folks who need this are/were.

Blindingly giving 600 a week to everyone so that some folks are making more doing nothing than they were working was foolish.

Back to work bonus is a good carrot, but they’ll have to continue a lesser enhancement. 300 or so. There’s just not going to be that many jobs for a while.

Where are the f’ing jobs?

On LinkedIn they have a list. All back-breaking manual labor minimum wage warehouse jobs, minimum-wage grocery store stock jobs or sub-minimum wage gig work.

While all white collar work at the above companies in the list is set aside for Indians and Communist Chinese.

Bullsh.

These ‘millions’ of gig delivery jobs pay sub-minimum wages when everyone is doing them. Can’t live on the $50 or so per day DoorDash, InstaCart, UberEats, PostMates and others can now get. Sure good money when only a few drivers in each area like last year. But with 30 to 50 drivers competing in the same area, it doesn’t even pay for the gas. And gas prices have risen from $1.50/gal to $2.60/gal in the last month.

Driving? Yeah everyone has an extra $4,000 to $5,000 lying around to take CDL training. Many don’t have the aptitude to be an OTR driver. Most can’t pass the 3 to 6 month hair follicle drug test. No 1.5“ to 2” hair anywhere on your body? auto fail and marked as refusal to take test. I know.
