I played slow pitch softball when my husband and I went to Saudi Arabia. The company, ARAMCO, [now Saudi ARAMCO] had to do things to keep us women busy...or there would be trouble.
So the camp had slow pitch softball. The women from the South were outstanding players and they won most of the time.
Well there was a team of British women...hopeless, and I played on their team. We had a couple of American "good ole boys" as our coach. It was NOT easy for them to teach those Brit women how to play.
I was the shortstop so that should tell you how BAD the rest were.
Well, one inning there was a woman at first and second. The hitter ROLLED a softie to me. I picked up ball, tagged the woman running to third [I didn't have to move an inch.] and LOBBED the ball to the second baseman. DOUBLE PLAY!!
Our two coaches went BERZERK with joy....a DOUBLE PLAY!
The team I played on was THATCHER'S CATCHERS!
We lost the game but I do remember that MEMORABLE DP: 6-4. I still remember it as if it were yesterday.
Huzzah for Maggie Thatcher.
There is a T.V. program on called "Questions for the Prime Minister." Occasionally I "catch" it.
Yeah, the Brits are mostly hopeless at American sports like baseball and basketball. But nobody can hold a candle to them when it comes to cricket and kerb-crawling! Well, maybe the Pakistanis . . .
