Common sense tells me that if 40 police or National Guard guys are marching up the streets in full tactical gear during the middle of a riot repeatedly ordering me to go back inside, I should probably get my ass back into the house.
If the cops/NG are wrong, take the film to a lawyer and let the courts handle it. No need to escalate the situation over something so minor as having to sit in your own home for 5 minutes while they pass by.

Maybe it was canister shot with paintballs.

They should shoot paint balls at rioters who are being violent, like throwing Molatov coctrails or rocks/bricks. That way they can identify the ones that need to leave the streets (spend a few days in confinement).

Depending on the temperature paint balls can either sting or hurt.

Those people were on private property and were doing nothing to warrant being shot at whether it was with paint balls or anything else. I do give them credit for not going into that person's back yard and not shooting their dog, though.

Yes, totally comparable situation to spending a few minutes in your own home as police/military sweep the neighborhood outdoors. Sure.

I think the woman filming the incident was somewhat liberal and scared of guns. So she did not know they were being shot with paintballs and not paint canisters.
It still bothered me to see the National Guard shooting anyone for standing on their own porch.
When I was into using paint ball guns, I noticed that on 50 degree days those paint balls could actually draw blood or leave nice black and blue marks....
