Taiwan pledges help for fleeing Hong Kongers, riles China

TAIPEI: Taiwan promised on Thursday (May 28) to settle Hong Kongers who flee the city for political reasons, offering help from employment to counselling, and prompting angry condemnation from Beijing as it pushes security legislation for Hong Kong.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen this week became the first world leader to pledge specific measures to help people from Hong Kong who may leave the former British colony because of the new legislation.

Chen Ming-tong, head of Taiwan's top China-policy maker, the Mainland Affairs Council, told parliament the government will establish an organisation to deliver "humanitarian relief" that includes settlement and employment in a joint effort with activists groups.

He said counselling services will also be available for Hong Kongers, some of whom may take part in increasingly violent pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

"Many Hong Kongers want to come to Taiwan. Our goal is to give them settlement and care," Chen said, urging the public not use the word refugee as it could be "emotionally harmful" for people from the city.

Chen did not give details, such as scale and timing of the relief when pressed by lawmakers, saying the government is still working on the programme.

China denounced Taiwan's move, saying its ruling Democratic Progressive Party was seeking to "loot a burning house" and sow discord.

"Bringing black, violent forces into Taiwan will bring disaster to Taiwan's people," China's Taiwan Affairs Office said, in language Beijing typically uses to refer to Hong Kong protesters.

Hong Kong's demonstrators have won widespread sympathy in democratic Taiwan, which China considers as its territory to be taken by force, if necessary. Taiwan has shown no interest in being ruled by autocratic China.

OUTSTANDING!

Taiwan making it clear that any demonstrator who fears arrest (or death) can come there is beautiful in so many ways.

I agree, but kept my comments short. Definitely PLA spies and agitators

Using the term “looting a burning house” indicates to me that the Chinese Communists view people as subjects and chattel.

as it appears that HK has been abandoned entoto now to the Commies, Taiwan/ROC would only be a very temporary safe haven for the refugees

Yeah lots of foriegn domestic workers from the Philippines and Indonesia are waiting for flights to exit Hong Kong, as are Westerners. No outgoing flights. If the PLA starts the killing, it won’t be like Tiananmen Square.. lots of foreigners will die as well... 350,000 expats there in total.

Wouldn’t it be a hoot if every resident of HK were to leave...for Taiwan or elsewhere!

Good point.

They do, of course. You are right to point out how their language reflects it.

Let’s see. Everyone leaves and leaves everything behind. The Chicoms inherit everything. It would be no problem filling the place up with Chicoms. One and a half billion of them to choose from. Would they ‘pay’ for all the assets?

Partner, I have heard that the rich will leave Hong Kong or they have left already.

It is because they have bought a townhome or home in Vancouver, Canada. They can tell their businesses that their new home is in Vancouver, Canada.

It they did this then they were very smart about the Communists in China.

Most of the wealthy HK people already have escape plans: dual citizenship with other countries such as Canada, Australia, England (not sure what your rules are in the US). Vancouver and Toronto have huge HK Chinese populations, and many people still living in HK have relatives (and often real estate) in those cities and others around the world.

A particularly nationalist Chinese newspaper, the Global Times, today said that if the Americans want to play the Hong Kong card they should play it, and then not be surprised at the results. More mildly, it was noted that the US has a huge trade surplus with the Hong Kong jurisdiction. More alarmingly, it was noted that 85,000 Americans currently live there.

Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia stand ready to become the next Asian financial centers (Singapore is already, and with a joint US Air Base in Paya Lebar, it’s the place to go...)

The Philippines pissed off any goodwill that pro-US previous administrations had with the Communist Chinese lapdog Dutae. These administrations worked hard (Nonoy, Ramos, Erap) to undo the damage the socialist Filipino senators did when they kicked the US out.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paya_Lebar_Air_Base

I remember the Singapore Movie, Ah Boys to Men, the initial 15 minutes was a simulated attack against Singapore by unmistakable Chinese Communist forces.

I heard a Chinese guy on YouTube whom I have been listening to almost every day as he gives talks on finance, economics and politics in China talk about that very question today. His verdict: Tokyo is already big and international enough, but English fluency there is very poor. Singapore doesn’t have that problem, but it is far away from Korea and Japan. Taipei is going to be always subject to CCP political risk, much like Hong Kong. He didn’t mention Seoul, but no other city in the region is sufficiently developed.

So he suggested Singapore and Tokyo will likely split the spoils.

And Singaporeans absolutely hate the new citizens (all from Communist China) that are upsetting the city-state’s careful ethnic makeup imposed since the Malay riots in the late 1960s. Only one riot occurred since then. Indian construction workers. Even the native Indians hated them...

Singapore is carefully split between Europeans, Tamil Indians, Hokken Chinese and Malays.
