Even as virtually every country's economy has struggled in recent months amid state-imposed lockdowns intended to combat the coronavirus pandemic, some disaffected progressives are convinced that the problem is capitalism -- reportedly sending membership in the Democratic Socialists of America [DSA] surging by 10,000 since March, for a still-paltry total of 66,000 members overall.
The coronavirus outbreak originated in China, a communist country, and went on to ravage several European countries with public health care systems, including Italy. With Bernie Sanders out of the presidential race, though, many socialists increasingly have sought a cause to support. They apparently found it in pandemic relief, saying the government's temporary stimulus checks could serve as a model for universal basic income even in good economic times.
"People are really starting to just look around and say, 'Man, capitalism isn't working,'" an unnamed co-chair of the Detroit DSA chapter told The Atlantic. "If the markets can’t even produce hand sanitizer or toilet paper or masks during a plague—what good is this system?"

Most DSA members, not leaders, are the stupidest commies/Marxists I’ve ever met or heard, and I’ve met some of the best (Aptheker, George Novack, I.F. Stone, Saul Alinksy, Peter Camejo and Syd Stapleton/Don Gurewitz, James Jackson, Abe Bloom, Abe Feinglass and Jack Spiegel, Leroy Wolins, William Kunstler and Arthur Kinoy, et c).
Only the veteran DSA leaders actually know what Marxism is all about. The newbies only know the propaganda lines, not the deeper Marxist thought that goes with it. Stalin, Lenin, Trotsky, Gus Hall, Togliatti and Gramsci, would be shitting in their graves if they could hear the “infantile Marxism” coming from this clowns (listen to Occasionally Sane Cortex spout the typical Marxist lines without understanding what she is saying).
Good old Bernie Sanders is the “dinosaur” of the Old Left (Dellinger, Hall, Richmond, Healy, Conyers, Crockett and Hayes all having passed away). However, having three houses and renting one out makes him more of a “covert capitalist” than a down in the streets red. Also having a probable criminal wife is a two-edged sword.
HOWEVER, do not underestimate the DSA as an influential national Marxist organization. Teaming with the Marxist Working Families Party and a few other national Marxist organizations (and the newly formed Progressives International movement), they will have an impact on the 2020 elections, esp. at the state and local levels where they have helped get elected city council persons, state legislature members, and a few US Congress people (Sinema, Cortez, perhaps Omar and Tlaib, Pressley, Payapal, Pocan, etc).
It took some time for some of these companies to shift gears. Also, some are unwilling to shift gears because the cost is high and they don't know if the change will payoff before the lockdowns are lifted and they have to change back.
Capitalism isn't perfect and the things companies have to do in order to be highly efficient and profitable during a normal economy (e.g. JIT) can backfire during an emergency.
Socialists wouldn't do any better, but this is why there is a FEMA and a national oil reserve, etc.
It's also why we should retain some manufacturing of critical products within the US even if the products could be produced cheaper in other countries.
