There Are Sensible Ways to Reopen a Country. Then There's America's Approach
Time ^ | 5/14/2020 | Haley Sweetland Edwards

This brutal spring, the U.S. faces two great crises. Over the past 14 weeks, 84,000 Americans have died of COVID-19.

That’s 28 times the death toll of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, more than the U.S. combat deaths in the Vietnam War, and one-quarter of the total global casualties from the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, the national lockdown designed to halt the spread of the disease has pushed 33 million Americans out of work, forced hundreds of thousands of small-business owners to board up their shops and left 1 in 5 children uncertain where they’ll find their next meal. It’s the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and with some economists forecasting unemployment to soar past 20%, a second one is a real concern.

As the death toll has rung out against a crescendo of economic despair, Americans have had no time to mourn. Instead, we have been pulled into an increasingly heated debate that pits those twin tragedies against each other. In exchange for our jobs, our livelihoods, the ability to pay our rent, how much death are we willing to bear? How many tens of thousands of lives are we willing to sacrifice so that the rest of us can work and live outside our homes? Eager to juice the economy before the November election, President Donald Trump is pushing hard for businesses to reopen. But public-health officials are raising the alarm. On May 12, infectious-disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, a key member of Trump’s own coronavirus task force, told a Senate panel that easing social-distancing restrictions too swiftly risks “multiple outbreaks throughout the country” that will “result in needless suffering and death.”

Are there enough dentists offices to keep this rag in business? This article starts out with wrong premises, and just goes downhill from there.

Always with the comparisons to 9/11 and Vietnam.

Why not compare it to the numbers of deaths attributable to TIME's "Man of the Year"s?

Gee, I don't kno, Haley. Why don't you go without paycheck for two months and write a piece about your conclusions?

If America thinks the way we are responding to this virus, now that we know the real death rate, is correct with these overdone lockdowns, then why are we stopping there?

Reduce the speed limit to 15 mph. Save thousands of lives.

Outlaw skiing, water skiing, and dozens of other risky activities. Save thousands of lives.

What are we waiting for? Start putting out those executive orders already.

"President Donald Trump is pushing hard for businesses to reopen."

The article starts with a lie: Trump is NOT pushing hard for all businesses, everywhere, to open immediately. He has promoted a phased-in approach that takes into consideration local conditions, the nature of the business, and ongoing safety precautions.

Many business owners - faced with bankruptcy - are pushing for a quicker re-opening, and most of the ones I've heard about are willing to impose extra safety conditions.

By the way, there is one aspect of this I haven't heard anyone address: throughout the epidemic, grocery stores and pharmacies have been allowed to remain open. Are the employees of those stores becoming sick in high numbers? (By "becoming sick," I don't mean testing positive for the virus, I mean getting sick enough to require medical treatment or hospitalization.)

If there is no evidence that these employees are taking a big risk, why shouldn't we allow other businesses to re-open, especially small businesses whose employees have less exposure to other people than cashiers at large grocery stores?

“Haley Sweetland Edwards”

The only thing missing in Haley’s name is the obligatory lefty hyphenation.

Or the number of political deaths plus imprisonments since 1949?

Or deaths from Spanish Flu?

"What are we waiting for? Start putting out those executive orders already."

You point out the phoniness of the "saving lives versus saving jobs" argument. If they really meant it, they would insist that we shut down the country every flu season or - as you said - impose all those other onerous restrictions. This is all about wrecking the economy to get rid of Trump. It is the Dem governors who are doubling-down, even in states like Oregon that have not been hit hard by the virus.

Awww... Poor TIME! Can't keep the restless natives under their (and the Dems) thumb long enough to destroy the Trump economy and thusly, America.

What a shame...

100%

They are trying to pin this on Trump. It's Katrina v2.0. He has made resources available. The rest is up to the states.

There are at least 330,000,000 people in this country. Eighty thousand is 0.024% of the total population. Using that number alone, it sounds large. Use that number as a percentage, it is almost insignificant.

People are born and die every day. The Wuhan flu is being blamed for far more deaths then actual.

Oh, and the slightest tick upwards of CV deaths and TIME (and their Dem masters) will be screaming, "SEE?! SEE?! We told you there'd be a second wave!").

But of course the death toll (read: total) will go up. Nutsy Leftists will latch onto that skewed piece of useless datum and scream bloody murder.
