New York (AFP) - A newly erected billboard in New York's Times Square shows the number of US coronavirus deaths that its creator says could have been avoided if President Donald Trump had acted sooner -- and it's called the "Trump Death Clock."
Created by filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, the "clock" was installed on the roof of a Times Square building, empty due to the pandemic. As of Monday, the counter showed more than 48,000 deaths out of a total of more than 80,000, by far the highest tally in the world.
The "clock" ticks on the assumption that 60 percent of COVID-19 deaths in the United States could have been prevented had the Trump administration implemented mandatory social distancing and school closures just a week earlier than it did, on March 9 instead of March 16, Jarecki explained in a post on Medium.
The New York-based filmmaker, who has twice won awards at the Sundance Film Festival, explained that 60 percent was a conservative estimate calculated by specialists following remarks made in mid-April by leading US infectious diseases expert Anthony Fauci.
"The lives already unnecessarily lost demand we seek more responsible crisis leadership," Jarecki wrote in his Medium post.
"Just as the names of fallen soldiers are etched on memorials to remind us of the cost of war, quantifying the lives lost to the president's delayed coronavirus response would serve a vital public function."

I just don’t understand what alternative universe these people live in.
I want to see a clock for all the MILLIONS of liberals who have been blocking any and all mention of the values of Hydroxychloroquine, for preventing many fatalities from Covid-19.
Might as well make the casualties a Complex Number since there is a large imaginary amount in their figures.
There are no “preventable” deaths.
Most of the deaths are happening in blue states. But that’s probably just coincidence.
This assertion is misleading because accelerating the date of mandatory social distancing (especially concerning school closures) would not have prevented deaths but only postponed them.
Social distancing is designed to flatten the curve not to kill the virus. Therefore it only prolongs the lethal timeline.
Against the people who might have died sooner as a result of allegedly tardy inflammation of social distancing, one must count the people who died in poverty and despair and will die because of unnecessary social distancing. One might count the cost bodies in nursing homes as well.
Neither of these numbers is possible to quantify. All of this is simply statistical demagoguery.
The entire idea is typical of leftist presumption nurtured by pseudoscience.

Add the deaths and infections of subway riders. Cuomo didn’t decide it needed daily cleaning until May.
Well the original projections said about 2.2 million could die, so he saved at least 2 million lives. Tell liberals that and watch heads explode.

It is sickening that China and Democrat governors would go to these lengths just to try to take down our President.

I think people make a serious mistake in according these people honest emotions and sentiments, that they actually, deep down, believe what they spout off.
They know they are lying, but they count it merely as strategy to defeat Trump, to win by defeating America.
Did the Trump administration implement “mandatory social distancing and school closures” at all? I thought that was all from state and local governments, that the federal government had no such authority.
