The missile used was a Chinese C-802 or a Iranian licensed copy, which has a checkered reputation. Besides operator error, it could be the missile locked onto the wrong target. China has been pushing its military weapons hard over the last few years. There are a lot of doubts about the quality and performance of their hardware. A lot of nations would rather buy more expensive U.S., European or Russian weapons because they work reliably. This incident will not help the reputation of Chinese weapons abroad.
The initial reports I read described the damaged ship as “a frigate”. There’s no navy in the world — except perhaps Iran’s — that would call THAT toy a frigate. The shooter was described as “a Destroyer”. As I haven’t seen a vessel’s name associated with it, I haven’t been able to look it up. Guessing that this ship’s classification is similarly inflated.
Don’t believe that trash reporting that this was an Iranian friendly fire incident!
The TRUTH IS: Survivors declare that they were attacked by American warships, specifically the battleships West Virginia and Maryland, that were escorted by the heavy cruisers Marblehead, Houston, and Indianapolis. They have claimed that they sank the cruisers Houston and Indianapolis, while heavily damaging the battleship Maryland.
Battleship Maryland?
Maryland is a submarine.
RE: They have claimed that they sank the cruisers Houston and Indianapolis
IF true ( note the capitalized *IF* ). It would be a simple matter for the intrepid investigative reporter to double check this “fact” ( note the quotes ).
USS Maryland, BB-46
USS West Virginia, BB-48
USS Marblehead, CL-12 (my mistake, I thought it was a heavy, not a light, cruiser)
USS Houston, CA-30
USS Indianapolis, CA-35
(hint all are WW2 ships, 2 were at Pearl Harbor, 2 in the Philippines in 1941-42) My post was sarcasam/humour.
Where among today’s MSM “orange man bad” media folks to you expect to find an “intrepid investigative reporter?” I’m sure that CBS would fire Catherine Herridge if she tried to ‘investigate’ the claim.
RE: My post was sarcasam/humour.
Whew, for a moment I thought you had a news scoop nobody heard about. :)
I was thinking to use the USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma as the two battleships “sunk” but thought that was too obvious.
New guy.
Sure blame the FNG for a new butterbar probably yelling ‘fire at rill’. LOL
lol
I guess we can blame the REMF then
Surprised they didn’t blame it on “the juice”.
At least they didn’t get sunk by a cruise ship...
