White House mulls pushing tax deadline to September or December

The White House is considering again delaying the deadline to file federal taxes and adopting economic measures to support Americans that do not require further legislation from Congress, NBC reported.

Tax Day, which has already been pushed from April 15 to July 15, could be extended to Sept. 15 or Dec. 15, although an official decision has not been made, the outlet reported, citing two people familiar with the discussions.

Trump administration officials have also considered blocking new federal regulations amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, NBC News reported. Additionally, White House officials are assessing whether the president can protect businesses from lawsuits if employees become infected with coronavirus while at work.

Nov. 2 would be a perfect compromise.

Agreed. Vote fresh after tax day. They made April tax day for that reason.

I got mine done in late March. Why delay it so long?

If you give people that long to do their taxes, they will take that long to do their taxes. I work with people that get refunds, and they wait until April 15th to file for some reason. They are incredibly lazy.

I had been somewhat apolitical until my first year in self employment in my twenties. I had a nice bank account that first year and thought that self employment sure was great!

Until it came time to do my taxes at the start of my second year. That bank balance dropped faster than a lead balloon thrown from the top floor of a skyscraper, and I learned a painful lesson about government.

Automatic deductions from paychecks is the most insidious invention, because it deprives most taxpayers of that experience.

Because I owe money.

I'm NOT giving them my money until the last moment I have to.

As a gig contractor who gets 1099s, I get taxed double for Social Security taxes.

Nov. 2 would be a perfect compromise.

April 15 income tax day and election day are almost as far apart on the calendar as possible, and that's by design.

I paid my taxis/estimates April 15, and plan to pay the June 15 estimate when due. If interest rates were 18% (the only thing I miss about Jimmy Carter!) I could see the point, but with 0% interest rates postponing the payments would just mean mailing a bunch of checks in all at once, and more pain.

How about eliminating the income tax entirely, since the Fed has now established that all the currency the government needs can simply be wished into existence?

Because the IRS offices are closed. It’s the paid pandemic 3 month holiday for government “workers”.

I have to wait for HR Block to open back up. I've always done mine myself, but we put a vacation home in short term rental service last year and I wanted an expert to figure it out for that year. Going back over what she did, I have NO CLUE how she came up with the numbers she came up with... so I want her to do it again this year with a full year's rental and make sure she explains every single number behind what's on Schedule E. I'm in no rush, I always owe.

At one time the federal government was financed by tariffs. No income tax. I’m okay with going back to that. 100% tariff on ChiCom goods. 15% tariff on everything else.

Side note to President Trump: I am available to be Secretary of the Treasury. But no meetings after 3 PM. That’s my nap time.

Alas, my wife and I paid our taxes in February. But, for those who don’t know, the $1200 wuhan virus relief check doesn’t count as income and for those over 70 1/2, you do not have to take the RMD from your IRA—if you’ve already taken your 2020 RMD you can put it back, but you have to do it the right way.

Heck, once they moved it from April 15, it’s a cinch no one is going to pay their taxes this year at all.

Except me.
