never lorded his superior learning over others.
One time long ago, and I don't remember the actual "subject" of the show, but a black woman called in taking umbrage at something Mr. Farber said about African American names.
In a very kind tone, he proceeded, (after asking her if she knew the origin of HER name), to edu-ma-cate her on how the African tribe in that country named their children
He was probably one of the most intelligent men I've ever had the pleasure of coming across.

but I honestly thought Jay Diamond was the most talented on-air radio personality I've ever heard.
Yes, he was the best impressionist I ever heard who was not an impressionist (e.g. Rich Little) for a living. Thank you for reminding me of him. Art Bell took a little bit to understand, but he was a great talent who was able to draw out his craziest guests without letting them know that he thought they were crazy. Sliwa was competant, but had a limited schtick. That said, he is the great part of NYC. He is like the Donald Trump NYC that regular Americans appreciate.

I knew Farber slightly at UNC. We tried to talk the school into creating a course in Chinese. He was a very bright guy. Sad. How time flies.

The man I heard, was a linguist. I don’t know how many languages he learned to speak, but it might have been at least a dozen.

RIP Mr. Farber! I got quite an education listening to him. Among his many pearls of wisdom, one of my favorites was when the USSR faced a wheat shortage crisis and had to buy wheat from us. Mr. Farber commented how a country where almost 50% of the people live off the land needs to purchase grain from a country where 3% of the people live off the land. That, right there is one of the best arguments against socialism.

He ran as a Republican against Bella Abzug in 1970, the first time she won, and did pretty well, then ran as a Conservative against Ed Koch for mayor in 1977, and didn't do so well. He did come close to winning the Republican mayoral primary that year and went on to do almost as well running as a Conservative as the Republican did.
I only heard his show a few times, but he really was a legend. And a legendary end: he turned 90 and died the next day.
