Gov. Ron DeSantis Shames Media, Outbreak Models’ Doomsday Predictions: Off by Nearly 500k in Florida

As Florida prepares to ease a month-long shutdown, Gov. Ron DeSantis delivered a scathing rebuttal of apocalyptic predictions for his state that were breathlessly hyped by the news media and proven wrong during the coronavirus crisis.

The governor showed slides of media stories warning that Florida would quickly run out of hospital beds while predicting the state would be the “next New York” or even a disastrous “uber Italy.”

Instead, the state with one of the most vulnerable populations due to age is faring well among the big states that were hit and is nowhere close to New York’s unfortunate predicament.

Watch the presentation here:

We need to focus on facts and not fear. They said Florida was going to be just like New York or an “Uber Italy” when it came to hospitalizations and fatalities. This was wrong. It’s time to focus on the facts and follow a safe, smart and step-by-step plan for recovery. pic.twitter.com/tCksZJ05a3

“We need to focus on facts and not fear,” said DeSantis. “I think that there’s been a lot that’s been done to try to promote fear.”

“They said Florida was going to be just like New York or an ‘Uber Italy’ when it came to hospitalizations and fatalities. This was wrong. It’s time to focus on the facts and follow a safe, smart and step-by-step plan for recovery.”

DeSantis posted a graphic of a Washington Examiner piece titled, “Florida could be the next New York in the coronavirus outbreak.”

Similar red alert headlines comparing Florida to the crisis in New York were blared by numerous other media outlets.

“Coronavirus could make Florida the next New York,” was the title of an alarming Sun Sentinel article which is currently titled “Coronavirus is ravaging New York, and Florida...

I am of sufficient vintage to remember the “AIDS epidemic”; as well as SARS, Ebola, and various and sundry avian flus and swine flus.

With every new pestilence there are two epidemics; the virus itself and the epidemic of fear.

It is the latter which is the more destructive.

Most viruses are easily defeated with a very weak (1:100) Clorox solution.

Fear is not so easily contained.

But Ron DeSantis is doing a great job swimming upcurrent!

I inadvertently turned on MSDNC today. You would think people are dying in the streets. It was unreal, thy are saying that despite the decline in cases or hospitalizations, this is only they beginning of the 1st wave and that is inhumane to even think to talk about re-opening. Any talk of the reasons as to why we must reopen was met with dismissive sighs and disgusted facial expressions.

Now I see why these people are so angry and scared every day.

Thank god we got desantis. His opponent was found in a hotel with a few fags drugs and undressed. He has been a level headed fair governor.

“epidemic of fear.”

Simply and accurately stated, FRiend lightman.

I’m sure looking forward to Monday here in southwest Florida. I just want to know when I can get a haircut — the mop I’ve grown is starting to make me look like Mark Twain.

I’ve been quite comfortable here at home during April. I always keep plenty of hurricane supplies on hand, so the panic buying didn’t affect me. About all I needed from our local Publix and Aldi was fresh vegetables.

Overall, Ron De Santis has been a good governor. Much like Trump, he has been between a rock and a hard place with these Chinese flu forecasts. With so little good data, he had to err on the safe side, at least for a while.

I wish he had ended this a week earlier, but I’m looking forward to maybe hitting Culver’s for a burger, assuming they’re open. Our town just got it’s first Indian restaurant — I’m worried about independent businesses, I hope they make it.

Stupid thing is, if a nasty virus from hell gets loose again in the future - a Captain Tripps type - nobody will believe it. It’ll be rough getting billions of people to comply with this kind of crap again. Of course, if the Rats drag this out and it does cost Trump the election (the main goal), they’ll have their turd world new USA. Mission accomplished.

I would simply say to any lib, NY has a death rate MORE THAN 22 times that of FL. I would like to shove that statistic up Andy Beshear’s south end.

The governor is not opening fast enough.....he has to tell the vulnerable to be careful..and open with no restrictions....

This is a tourist state six million visitors a month to Orlando...

People will not come to Disney World with masks and social distancing..

The virus went through here in February and March as the flu..

President Trump was correct when he said Gov. DeSantis was doing a good job of handling the COVID-19 situation in FL. I do think the spring break crowd may have contributed to spread elsewhere when they went back home, but it seems to me most of those kids were already in FL when COVID-19 really got going. Warm weather and sunshine — maybe less damage was done with them being there than somewhere else...

As for other recent epidemics, this one has a new twist - considerably greater asymptomatic spread. Look at what the COVID-19 mitigation measures did to flu - absolutely stomped it, while COVID-19 we have leveled off — at a fairly grim (but not disastrous) daily fatality rate.

It’s interesting how quickly people forget the number of dead was doubling every 2.5 days. Like it never happened.

One problem that I’ve seen with the way Florida is handling home schooling regarding making sure all kids have wifi, each kid has a computer for home schooling, etc... We’ve seen how those internet casts have hacked by pranksters.

This is opposed to Mississippi, where they have been simply broadcasting the school lessons on the local tv channels during the day (even seen ads for it on my relatives local station on Roku during the tornado coverage.)

Why not take back PBS —ditch all the liberal crud that passes for entertainment—and use the existing infrastructure for home schooling on local tv broadcasts?

Even when the state finally opens, I doubt that Disney will be open.

“People will not come to Disney World with masks and social distancing.”

They’ve been doing that at the HK Disney Land since SARS.

The US could do worse than take the Hong Kong approach to this virus. And note, it was the citizens of Hong Kong, not the government that dis it. Things are still open. everybody is working but the infection rate and death rate are very low.

New York could learn a lot from Hong Kong

Disney wont open until June at the earliest and that would still be the reality of the situation even if the Governor had been stupid and never issued any kind of restrictions whatsoever. It has an image to protect and lots of people dying after a visit to Disney World is not something they are going to be OK with.

Ron DeSantis has proven himself to be the most intelligent governor in this country. He had the courage to do the logical thing in the face of Democratic criticism during a time when this nation was struggling in the darkness of fear. The left always salivates when a crisis offers the chance for them to bring this nation to it's knees under a totalitarian regime run by them. They do not care about the deaths of millions of people. They only care about wealth and power. Thank God, for Ron DeSantis. There are not many of him left anywhere. Some of us always knew that a horrible crisis was the only thing which was going to awaken the US to the depth of depravity to which we have fallen at the hands of a few who respond to the smell of money and power. We are now in it and how it will turn out and how long it might take is an unknown. Will we look up from this and understand what really matters in life or, like the aftermath of 9/11, go back to business as usual, which would hasten our demise from world history. Personally, I pray for a good old fashioned spiritual Judeo-Christian revival where we love the Lord, our God with all our hearts and our neighbor as ourselves.

“Ron DeSantis has proven himself to be the most intelligent governor in this country.”

****

That would be Kristi Noem of SD. She REFUSED a state lockdown and stated:

” For me personally, I took an oath to uphold our state Constitution. I took an oath when I was in Congress to uphold the United States Constitution. So I believe in people’s freedoms and liberties and I always balance that with every decision that I make as governor. I get overly concerned with leaders who take too much power in a time of crisis because I think that’s how we directly lose our country someday by leaders overstepping their proper role.”

She’s the best governor in America so far..

It’s interesting how quickly people forget the severity of previous pandemics we’ve gone through without shutting down the country and putting tens of millions out of work. Like it never happened.
