Let’s let the place collapse, then absorb it into “South” Korea. Let’s make North Korea East Germany.
The costs of Reunification (above and beyond monetary) are likely to be so profound it may be considered ‘too hard to do’. 30 years after the IGB fell, Germany is still dealing with a myriad issues stemming from 40 years as separate countries...if Korean Reunification occurred tomorrow, it will have been 75 years of division. There are now significant differences between northerner and southerner: Social and political divides, physical differences, and even language will need coordination.
Even if there are no military clashes, there will almost certainly be medical, humanitarian and environmental disasters not seen since WW II. There will be weapons and other assets to be located and secured. Armed forces from the ‘new’ Korea will certainly need assistance (i.e. US Military), but other players will likely shove their noses under the tent...and once Chinese and Russian ‘peacekeepers’ show up, getting them to leave might prove difficult.
Not saying reunification is impossible, or not worth achieving, but it will have a profound effect both for Koreans and the American people. I don’t see this as an “if this happens” issue, rather it’s “when”. It will be a wild ride.
No need to do that they print US dollars there by the truckload.
