THE PLANNING behind this makes it clear he was going to kill folks any way he possibly could. The means(gun) is NOT the issue. This man was going to kill. If he didn’t have a gun it would be a knife, axe, truck, poison, or explosive.

The rural in New Zealand did not give up their guns nor did the rural Australians. I am sure rural Canadians will never comply also. 18 dead is horrific,sick and sad but is not worth erasing liberty for the rest.
reading the linked article, the geometry of the descriptions (in and out of cars, pulling people over, shooting point blank, etc.) lead one to believe the weapons in question were semo auto handguns.
Sounds like he met his end wielding a gun he took from the female RCMP officer he murdered. RCMP service arm is a 9mm S&W 5946 pistol. If he had had a semi-auto rifle, wouldn't he have used that instead?
I worked more than 5-years in various parts of western Canada and I am pretty certain that AR-platform firearms are already banned.
At least all my Canadian shooting friends envied pics of my scary "assault rifles".

these kinds have lingering bitterness for some perceived slight in life and are basically sociopaths...I read elsewhere that someone who knew him in HS said he was not well liked....

That obviously would make zero sense. It is far more effective to outlaw guns because there is no other way to kill people, everybody knows that!! People don’t kill people GUNS kill people.
