The former mayor of a Northern California city who stepped down after he harshly criticized President Donald Trump and his supporters has been killed in a plane crash.
Dr. Bill Kirby, who was the mayor of Auburn, died in the crash Saturday morning near the Auburn Municipal Airport, officials have said.

I am, quite honestly, not sure what to think about this.
He had “resigned” the rotating mayorship but still remained on the city council, IIRC. This resolves that problem.

Many small towns operate this way so his stepping down was meaningless. I used to watch when cable access showed a few of towns counsel meetings it was the same people but they just took turns being mayor it was like very slow motion musical chairs.

Flying when your mind is elsewhere has claimed a lot of lives. This dude thought he was in control, but he was in the middle of a national controversy and made an ass of himself, had to resign as mayor and issued an apology.
That is precisely when NOT to climb into the cockpit. The day you got divorced, big trouble at work, that day after a funeral, etc.
