Washington: Extraordinary times require even closer cooperation between friends, US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday, thanking India after the government allowed the United States to buy 29 million doses of hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug believed effective in the treatment of coronavirus. "Extraordinary times require even closer cooperation between friends. Thank you India and the Indian people for the decision on HCQ. Will not be forgotten! Thank you Prime Minister @NarendraModi for your strong leadership in helping not just India, but humanity, in this fight!" the American President tweeted.
On Wednesday, Mr Trump confirmed that the first shipment of a total of 29 million doses of the drug was on its way from three factories in Gujarat to the United States, reports news agency PTI.
"I want to thank Prime Minister Modi of India for allowing us to have what we requested for the problem arose and he was terrific. We will remember it," Mr Trump later told reporters at his daily White House news conference on coronavirus on Wednesday.
Modi and Trump have a unique relationship.

the companies making hydroxychloroquine in India are U.S. companies that are not being allowed to export the products that they own from India, and relying on personal relationships is simply not good enough in the long run for the United States to be a secure nation.
We thus need a new superpower initiative in which the United States isn’t just the biggest energy producer in the world, and the biggest food producer and exporter in the world, but we also MUST become the biggest pharmaceutical manufacturer in the world (including full vertical integration of precursor supply), and thereby transform ourselves into the largest exporter of pharmaceuticals in the world as well.
It’s not good enough to just be self-sufficient in food and energy production and a world exporter of surpluses of those essential products, but the same HAS to be true with pharmaceuticals too: the United States of America MUST become the nation that all the other nations turn to for their pharmaceuticals, instead of us remaining the nation that turns to others for our medications.
Energy and food self-sufficiency are not sufficient to maintain national security as long as we remain a beggar nation when it comes to relying on other nations to supply our healthcare system.
True national security stands on four legs: military power, energy self-sufficiency, food self-sufficiency, and healthcare self-sufficiency.
India will become our new and best ally to replace the murdering ChiComs.

No, they are not US companies. They are Indian companies. Zydus Pharma, Ipca Labs and Vital Labs. A fourth, Mangalam Pharma is gearing up.
Also, your contention that a US company anywhere can supply what it makes even if the host country bans its export, is not valid. That company would be an Indian registered company with American ownership. It has to follow the laws of the country it operates in.
We don’t need 29 million doses...or even 290,000 for this overblown mass panic. But Trump will “reward” our Indian economic enemy with more American job-destroying H1-Bs just the same.
