MSNBC's Chris Hayes ripped for suggesting initial death toll projections were inflated for Trump victory lap

MSNBC's Chris Hayes was ripped on social media for suggesting that the White House coronavirus task force team "rolled out the model showing 100k deaths after they knew it would be less" so President Trump could take a victory lap.

"The most cynical interpretation of all this, one I can't quite bring myself to accept, is they rolled out the model showing 100k deaths after they knew it would be less than that so they could anchor everyone to that # and take a vicotry lap when "only" tens of thousands died," Hayes wrote to his 2.1 million followers on Wednesday night.

The tweet came after a key forecasting model created by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington reduced its prediction of coronavirus deaths in the U.S. The model now estimates a peak of 60,415 deaths by early August. Less than a week ago, it had predicted more than 93,000 deaths and on Sunday it projected more than 81,000.

Criticism quickly followed the post, with some people pointing out that Hayes's comment was "a direct indictment" of task force medical experts including Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx, who have used the IHME model for their projections. Fauci told Fox News on Wednesday that original death toll projections "are going to be downgraded" due to successful social distancing mitigation efforts.

They were inflated for a CDC/Fauci/Birx victory lap.

Did Trump decide it made sense to ride along?
I’ll concede that’s a possibility.

IN MSNBC’s evening line-up, this guy runs a close race with Rachel Maddow for First Place Idiot Du Jour.

The models never showed a single number of predicted deaths. They all showed large ranges of predicted deaths based on what actions we took and how infectious the virus turned out to be and other factors.

Politicians and the media would fixate on single figures because most of them are incapable of explaining complexity.

RELATED response to Chris Hayes:

"Remember - this conspiracy theory is not an indictment of President Trump. This is a direct indictment of Dr. Fauci, Dr. Birx and the other medical experts who have used accepted modeling to arrive at their conclusions (which now have been revised)."

“It’s just the flu” —> Trump is evil! It’s much more serious than he says and he knows it!

“Maybe 100,000 deaths” —> Trump is evil! It’s not nearly that serious and he knows it!

Here we have Chris Hayes of the MSM upset that more people have not died from COVID and denying President Trump the right to claim a victory. Wow.

Trump was being bashed 24/7 to follow the science, so he follows the model and now they bash him for that.

FOAD MSM!

Yes and no. The “experts” and Trump’s enemies were throwing the large numbers out there, along with their other fear mongering. Trump knew it was BS and knew they were making an easy target for success. He even said, “if we keep the deathes below 100,000 we did a great job.”

Same thing with the ventilators. States were screaming they needed thousands more and Trump wasn’t giving them out. Now they are playing musical chairs with them because none of those governors want huge stockpiles of unused ventilators when the music stops.

Or comprehending complexity. They are not the sharpest knives in the drawer and that is distressingly obvious.

Yeah, but that’s the point. They were spouted out by Fauci and Birx. Not Trump. So how could “he” be respobsible for overinflating.

MSNBC is worse than CNN

The goal of the press is to take down President Trump. They have thus far failed in their many previous attempts—really too many to recall. So now they’ll work this angle—if hundreds of thousands of Americans die—it is a failure on Trump’s part. And if far fewer die, it’s because Trump inflated the estimates to make himself look good. No matter how this ends ORANGE MAN BAD!

But President Trump now has record of thwarting their schemes and coming out stronger.
