Florida governor believes coronavirus was circulating during Super Bowl in Miami

ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a news conference Tuesday that he believes COVID-19, the novel coronavirus responsible for the current global pandemic, was circulating in the state during this year’s Super Bowl game, which was held in South Florida, the area of the Sunshine State with the most positive cases of the virus.

Super Bowl LIV was held Feb. 2 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, but it wasn’t until about one month later, on March 1, that the governor announced Florida’s first positive cases of COVID-19.

According to the Sun Sentinel, attendance at Hard Rock Stadium for Super Bowl LIV was just over 62,000.

The governor said Tuesday that he believes there were already cases of the virus present in the Sunshine State but that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s criteria for testing at that time would not have allowed Floridians to be tested unless they had recently visited certain areas of China, where the virus was first reported last year.

I believe that too.

I believe I caught it after Thanksgiving

I believe Herd Immunity is further along than they think

I’ll stop now rather than going all Kevin Costner on you.

Was there an increase in people hospitalized with unknown breathing problems? None of these “early infection” stories cite increased hospitalizations making it seem like the early COVID was a less dangerous variant.

He’s trying to dodge the blame for all the death that is going to result from his refusal to shut down and quarantine his state.

The coronavirus denialists are doing Comaneci level backflips and aerial adjustments to divert attention from the fact that they failed to take action to protect the citizens of their states.

Super Bowel was too big to shut down. A lot of people had to get theirs before everyone else got shut down.

If you look at the demographic profile of folks who attend (wealthy, mobile) this seems very plausible.

Hard to say. No one was looking for Covid-19 back in December. Everyone was thinking it was contained in China and they WHO stated it couldn’t be transmitted human-to-human.

I was flying between Tampa and Detroit almost weekly in January and February. After one flight, I had the absolute worst cold I’ve ever experienced. Quick onset, chills, fever, muscle ache, headache. All the classic symptoms of Covid-19. I had a flu shot earlier this year, but because of my age; 65+ and an underlying condition of hypertension my Dr. wanted me to have a pneumonia shot as well. I didn’t get around to it, so I attributed my bad cold to that reason.

I wouldn’t be surprised if I had the Covid-19 virus and just wasn’t aware of it. I think it’s been with us a lot longer than people realize.

The state is pretty much shut down...no gatherings, no non-essential businesses, even the beaches are closed ...and Governor DeSantis is leaving it to local cities and jurisdictions to deal with the specifics. Some have gone nuts - “no walking in the park even by yourself,” for example, while others permit individuals to exercise, etc.

Personally, I think shut downs will ultimately be found to have done more harm than good, but he certainly can’t be accused of having “refused” to take these measures.

Not true at all. We have been distancing for a month now and locals in major metros did stay at homes weeks ago. Florida is fine and acted appropriately. Probably overreacted as facts bear out.

De Santis stay at home order was April 1. He still has not closed the beaches and is fighting a lawsuit that’s attempting to get him to do just that. Just the facts.

Javier Castellano, who is a top jockey, was quarantined at his mother’s house in Florida for the past 14 days after testing positive for the virus. His exact words from yesterday “I never had any symptoms. The scary part is people can have it and you don’t know it.” He was allowed to fly home yesterday to New York where he lives. He said five people were on the plane flight. I don’t know what to make of this entire situation but it helps to have avenues such as FR available for other’s experiences.

The area was flooded with KC Chiefs fans and San Francisco 49er fans, yet those two states have fared well. Don’t blame the February 2 Super Bowl.

This issue has divided even the ardent conservatives among us.

Does anyone remember as issue that divided conservatives exactly 20 years ago?

Hint: It involves a keyword in this article

Excellent post--actually based on facts and data. So rare around here these days.... :-(
