Mnuchin says he thinks US businesses could reopen in May

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday that he thought the United States could reopen the economy during the month of May.

“I do,” Mnuchin told CNBC host Jim Cramer in a phone interview on Thursday morning in response to a direct question about whether the country could be “open for business” in the month of May.

“I think as soon as the president feels comfortable with the medical issues, we are making everything necessary that Americans companies and American workers can be open for business and that they have the liquidity to operate their business in the interim,” Mnuchin continued.

Businesses across the country have been closed as a part of social distancing policies to slow the spread of the coronavirus. It has devastated the economy, with another 6.6 million people filing unemployment claims in the last week.

The White House’s guidelines encouraging Americans to stay home and physically distance themselves are in place until April 30, meaning that President Trump will face a decision at the end of the month on whether to relax or extend them further.

That should allow sufficient time for most of the really small businesses to fail.

That is too long.

The fix will kill the economy.

End it on Easter Sunday.

While we sleep, the President is getting the Malaria Cocktail to every governor in every state. If the governor wants to kill people...he/she can just horde it....or if he/she wants to make people well, they’ll distribute it to every Pharmacy in the country with restrictions. The Board that overlooks Pharmacies has the power to walk into any dispensary at any time and review their books.

They can reopen whenever they want as far as I am concerned.

However, this is my perspective on at least some businesses.

Yesterday, right before I shut Dan Bongino off for yelling and cursing at me over the economy, he complained that his friend, who had recently opened a baseball card shop, could not stay in business, because he hasn’t had a customer in three weeks.

While I feel for this person, even if he opens his shop today, I won’t be shopping in it. I don’t need baseball cards. I’m not going to risk contracting CCP-19 for baseball cards, or comic books or any other such items. I don’t have the money for them either. I’m also not working.

So I don’t know what to tell Dan or his friend. There’s going to be some economic fallout from this, even if it ends right now.

Thank the good Lord for Mnuchin, Kudlow, Miller, and Navarro. At least there are some sane voices in the administration advising the President. I worry that May 1 is too late, but at least the conversation is starting.

IMHO, what they should be doing is informing the American people about the calamity that is being unleashed. Let them see models of cancer deaths from postponed exams, heart-disease deaths from postponed surgery, and suicides. Let these models be compared with the crap CV ones. Until the People see this, there will not be enough support for opening up.

I don’t need baseball cards.

So you wouldn't have been a customer even without the virus. I'm having a hard time figuring out what your point is.

I work for a vending machine service company. I have heard that our factory clients are expecting to get back rolling again on May 4. I think restaurants, concerts, sports will lag behind that.

I hope you’re right, Mr. Secretary.

Because by my read America’s patience runs out at 11:59PM on April 30.

In all this I have heard Trump tell the one and only brazen lie of his Presidency.

Reporter: Is there any friction between your economic advisors and your medical team on this (decision to extend the lockdown)?

Trump: None

Clearly unequivocally untrue.
I guess he felt he had to say it to support his own decision.

PLENTY of time to crash the economy completely before May. And watch: the Gay State governors will ignore any federal guidelines to let people go back to work. And churches, they especially want to keep the churches clamped down. Habits are formed in only 6 weeks. The Demonrats can cut church attendance in half just by waiting at least 6 weeks.

You think America is divided now? Wait till some states are open for business and others are under involuntary quarantine.

Where do you think most people will want to live?

Maybe in the bigger cities, but in small towns it won’t. Also it’s warmer that tends to surpress a virus anyway. With HCQ as a treatment and with vacs in testing I think we are going to vanquish this thing. By the middle of summer fans will be packing stadiums again.

At that rate and with the oncoming economic carnage, the people lost to the wuhan flu will be considered the lucky ones.

I don’t think so. Sportsball, to the elites, is another opiate of the masses, like religion. And they wish to PUNISH us for electing trump. So no sportsball.

I thin stadiums and concert venues etc need those thermo imaging things to identify when someone has a temperature. That would help stop the spread of any flu.

While I wouldn’t consider Indiana a Gay State, Holcomb, once he got going, has been earning his dictator stripes with the best of them. I understand one issue with the governors but if the estimates of bed and equipment needed are way high as it now appears they should have less fear of lynch mobs over those things which they control.

It will be very interesting to see how each governor reacts when the federal guidelines change.

I love comic books, at least older ones.

But I don’t need them either.

My point is that there are all sorts of things that I’m not going to risk my life to get, even if I could.

Crowded sushi restaurant, one of my favorite places in the world. Was there about 1.5 months ago maybe. I don’t see myself going again anytime soon or even ever, even if I could.

Every now and then, I used to love to go to the movies with my best buddy from New Orleans. Last two movies we saw were Joker and 1917.

Movie theater is out for the foreseeable future, open or not.

I have been out and about and contrary to your thought, many small businesses never actually closed.

I drove the interstate at 8:00 this morning and commuter traffic was near normal.

I drove through a small SW virginia town Monday and most small businesses were in fact open. Trucks and vans and pickups are still present as before.

Most companies serving food are maintaining some service via delivery or takeout. The volume is not normal I guess, but they are open.

If they know what’s good for them, they will open BEFORE Mother’s Day. Nothing like a bunch of pissed off Mothers to gain attention. Especially those over 65.
