McCaul says China must do more to control animal markets

McCaul says China must do more to control animal markets © Stefani Reynolds Rep. Mike McCaul (R-Texas), the top Republican on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, says China must do more with its markets to prevent the outbreak of diseases like the coronavirus.

In a Monday letter to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the World Health Organization (WHO), McCaul argues that China should do more to prevent the sale and trade of exotic animals, which he said contributed to the coronavirus pandemic.

“While I welcomed the announcement last month that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has permanently banned the trade and consumption of non-aquatic wild animals, I share the concerns of many in the conservation community that this ban does not go far enough,” he wrote.

That would be a lot more sound idea, if we actually knew this came from
one of those markets. We do not know that.

The practices used at those markets would cause anyone to wonder
about the threat of disease emanating from them.

The fact is, the flu originates in China each year. About every ten
years we got a big outbreak of something like H1N1, or COVID-19.
That needs to be researched and stoped

We lose tens of thousands of people and expend massive amounts of
health care dollars each year dealing with these outbreaks.

China, the WHO, and the global community, need to study this
phenomenon and take measures to stop it.

No crap. Frankly, we should ban virtually all travel from China until they fix the problem.

Better yet, amend the Foreign Sovereign Immunity Act to allow negligence claims against the Chinese government for all of the victims in the US. Just like Congress did when it overrode Obama’s veto and allowed victims to sue Saudi Arabia for 9/11.

The practices used at those markets would cause anyone to wonder why China is considered a civilized nation.

You won’t get any argument out of me on that.

Some of those Asian Nations eat things that would cause me
the urge to hurl just hearing of it.

Look for Xi Jinping to suggest that we should be grateful for these opportunities to keep our collective immune systems tuned up, and that he’s decided not to charge us for the privilege.

Back in the 90s, one of my pharmacist friends got married. She
invited all of us to her wedding, and there was a massive sit-down
dinner in the Los Angeles China town section of the city. They
brought things to the table I simply could not eat. It was an
elegant affair, and I always appreciated being invited, but I got
out of there perhaps trying two or three things out of twenty. They kept bringing food, and I kept wondering how anyone could eat it. LOL

I’m sure you’re on target there.

I view him as a very problematic adversary.

He’s no friend of the general populace there, and I don’t see him
as even that good for the international community.

China is the dirtiest culture on earth, and that's saying a lot. In my experience, most Chinese individuals in their homes are quite OCD about dusting and cleaning, changing shoes (inside vs outside shoes), showering before bed, no carpeting in the home, etc etc etc... But there seems to be NOTHING in all of Chinese culture about littering the outside world with, well, everything. They are #1, by far, for ocean pollution, and ocean plastic pollution. They are #1, by far, in CO2 emissions. They have added more CO2 emissions since 1990 than the rest of the planet, COMBINED.

China does possess a rather unique ability to change, wholesale, in very short order, when they are openly and publicly shamed for shortcomings in their culture. Gender inequality in hiring and pay is one recent example. Littering the planet certainly needs to be one of the next ones to be done.

Yup. The conditions and practices performed in Chinese “wet markets” would make any civilized person vomit. There are dozens of documentaries depicting these savage conditions.

Is it that China is amazingly filthy? Or are they deliberately inflicted pneumonia on us? I agree that flu originating each year in China needs to be investigated.

Any country that allows “wet markets” in every city, where exotic creatures from bats and snakes to pangolins are kept in cages and then slaughtered and cooked to order in the stalls next to where pork, dog meat, poultry and fish are left to hang among the flies, deserves to be blamed for pandemic virus outbreaks.

Their current sanitary conditions would shock Upton Sinclair. We figured this shit out more than a century ago, and fixed it. China just doesn’t care.

SARS scientists have been warning the world about the infectious viral cocktail lab of Chinese “wet markets” for decades.

If Covid-19 came from Indonesia or Nebraska, they would deserve the same blame. But it didn’t. It came from the country that pays poachers around the world to kill tigers and rhinos for “traditional Chinese medicine.”

China deserves to be shunned from the civilized global community until they at least enter the 20th Century, if not the 21st.

Yeah, when you read about what they really eat in China, you realize that chow mein and chop suey are as American as hot dogs and hamburgers.
