“... people are in full blown panic mode over this.”
What are they doing, washing their hands in panic?

There might be a drop in regular flu from this.

Imagine reporting every case of the flu this way

It's not the flu. It's a new virus to which there is no known natural immunity response.

If reports coming out of China are true there's reason to be concerned about the spread.

I'm not panicking and I don't recommend anyone panic.

However, I believe everyone should be aware of where infections are being reported so people know to take caution.

[This is the only disease I have ever seen reported nationally on a case by case basis. Totally insane. Imagine reporting every case of the flu this way. Or even every random heart attack. Or automobile accident...you wouldn’t be able to keep up with the first fifteen minutes.

And yet people are in full blown panic mode over this.]

We used to routinely deport people caught at the border. Then this huge storm came up when an individual child was photographed at a confinement facility and ICE went into deep freeze. This is getting so nutty.

Nope. 3.4% is the fatality rate. For transmission, think three or four time as easy to catch as "the flu that's going around."

And around 15% of those who catch it, end up in the ICU.

You’re right. I realized it after I posted it.

Those who are likely to have a severe case have conditions and/or elderly. I’m in a class where both the fllu or this would probably take me out.

These measures described above remind me of the infantile paralysis (poliomyelitls) crisis of my childhood.

It seems we were able to provide enough Iron Lungs in a short time to treat many, many affected children.

We also came up with enough hospital space and professionals to deal with it.

I believe our medical system can rise to the present crisis.

You and I and about ten percent of FReepers.

Many of us are in our seventies, eighties, and nineties.

We are the tough old ones who survived WWII, the polio epidemic, Korean War, Vietnam War, numerous floods, tornadoes and earthquakes, TMI, 9/11, and many other things.

Not to mention the Clinton and Obama administrations.

We won’t let the Chinese virus take us out!

In totalitarian cultures truth spreads quickly from family members to family members. Within a few days of news breaking about this virus half of Asia seemed ‘in the know’...and acted accordingly.

That’s what happens when Amazon hired Communist Chinese H1B trash instead of Americans. And King County is crawling with this H1B trash.

Bought their filthy disease and virus here after travel back to Communist China, no doubt

I got something from Amazon last week - - when I opened it I got that ‘face itching’ thing a person gets when around a common cold virus. Or something that causes allergies. I wiped down the counter top and dumped the small metal cups in a sink with water and vinegar... The next morning that area still had that feel. So I bleached it. It’s probably nothing... but it’s still creepy.

Nope. 3.4% is the fatality rate.

Back of napkin calculations for some areas, based on numbers of deaths compared to those who've recovered, indicate a rate of 5%. And that rate will likely go higher once hospitals become overwhelmed.

Seattle: Prime target for a neutron bomb. Spare the Space Needle but don’t give out free drug needles. You can’thelp someone get rid of a drug habit if you supply them with the implements they need to keep it going.

Bezos should be out in Seattle working in his package delivery operation there as an example of leadership dedication.

Yeah, right. This prick will remain safe in California or DC or the Caribbean until the epidemic ends.

The 3 west coast cities to watch are Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco.

Dangerous liberal social policies.

God Bless you! I’m only in my 50’s, but had my immune system wiped out from a bone marrow transplant. So, I’m like a young child although this whole process aged me terribly. I’m pretty much home 95% of the time now.

Like you said, we’ll get thru this. IWe didn’t fight this hard to let a virus get us.

So.....what happens when the US postal workers are infected?

Maybe pick it up the mail with gloves and put it in the microwave?

BTW, don't put greenback in the microwave....they catch on fire...I did it!

the risk of transmission for employees not in close contact with the stricken individual “is assessed to be low.”

This ridiculous comment is how you turn an epidemic into a pandemic.

The employee would have touched surfaces throughout the building, particularly in the rest room, break area, and any other common areas.

Anyone else who touched those surfaces would be at a _high_ risk for exposure, not a low risk.

The wise course would be to isolate and then test everyone who had access to the floor where the employee worked (or at least who used the areas I discussed) over the last several days.

That is _not_ CDC protocol, and that is why a week from now (after testing is done at scale and results are released) the numbers will be very high.

Right now all any of us can do is be aware of the problem and points of transmission and take precautions.

No one can protect you but you.
