Sen. Doug Jones took a pricey European fundraising trip this winter where he stayed at two fancy hotels in London and Paris and paid for the luxe getaway with his campaign funds, records show.
The Alabama Democrat spent $487 to stay at the K+K Hotel Cayre in Paris, billed as “a beautiful historic building located in heart of Saint Germain Des Prés” that's within walking distance to Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. The hotel boasts "soundproofed" luxury rooms and private black marble bathrooms with underfloor heating.
The red-state politician up for reelection in November also spent $1,296 at the Baglioni Hotel in London, which describes itself as “one of the finest 5-star luxury hotels in London" that's located in "one of the most exclusive, elegant and celebrated parts of the city.”

Why was he raising funds in Europe? Does the prohibition on foreign funds only apply to Presidential campaigns?

Doug’s staff says that he was visiting well-to-do American Democrats who live in Europe...to get donation situations set up.
I think he is anticipating a tough campaign season and normal US donations coming into him won’t be that great. So he’s hoping to round up a couple dozen of Democrats living abroad to improve the campaign chest.
Course, I could see a 60-second ad being developed where some fake French guy wanders around and Alabama folks question the guy and why he needs to get involved in state politics.
A republican would have been thrown in jail for this by now.

Alabama pols are turning out to be more corrupt than Jersey pols, lol. We just had a school board steal close to a million dollars and none of them are being held accountable.
Foreign money. He needs more. That’s how he got elected last time. That, and a compliant media (and most of FR) ready to commit libel (and slander) against Judge Roy Moore.
He’s doomed anyway. He knows it. He figures he’ll just squeeze whatever he can out of his campaign fund for his own personal use.
