My first cousin’s daughter married a young non-practicing muslim guy last year. He’s a very sweet, shy guy. Just started practicing medicine, right before the marriage. I’m not particularly worried about my cousin’s daughter being taken advantage of, because, although she’s beautiful, very smart, and has a great personality, she definitely wears the pants in the family. Her father-in-law and his wife wanted them and my cousin and her husband to go to the local mosque, to have the marriage, done first, in the Islamic way. When they got there, the imam said a few words, and asked the groom to sign the marriage certificate. When he and the bride stepped forward, the imam said to the bride, “No. Not you. Only HE signs!” The bride looked at the groom, then the imam, and said, “Forget it! Either we both sign, or neither signs!”, at which she stalked off, with the groom meekly hurrying after her. His father and step-mother were furious, but there was nothing they could do. The groom is half Pakistani and half Puerto Rican. Although I’m not worried about her being abused, I do pray that they will convert to Christianity. She was raised as a Catholic, but is apparently non-practicing.
