Lawyer: Assange was offered US pardon if he cleared Russia

LONDON (AP) — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to claim during an extradition hearing that the Trump administration offered him a pardon if he agreed to say Russia was not involved in leaking Democratic National Committee emails during the 2016 U.S. election campaign, a lawyer for Assange said Wednesday.

Assange is being held at a British prison while fighting extradition to the United States on spying charges. His full court hearing is due to begin next week.

At a preliminary hearing held in London, lawyer Edward Fitzgerald said now-former Republican congressman, Dana Rohrabacher, visited Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in August 2017.

Fitzgerald said a statement from another Assange lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, recounted “Mr. Rohrabacher going to see Mr. Assange and saying, on instructions from the president, he was offering a pardon or some other way out, if Mr. Assange ... said Russia had nothing to do with the DNC leaks.”

Responding to the the lawyer’s claims, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said, “This is absolutely and completely false.”

President Donald Trump “barely knows Dana Rohrabacher other than he’s an ex-congressman. He’s never spoken to him on this subject or almost any subject,” Grisham said. “It is a complete fabrication and a total lie. This is probably another never-ending hoax and total lie from the DNC.”

Emails embarrassing for the Democrats and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign were hacked before being published by WikiLeaks in 2016.

If you have not been convicted you can’t be pardoned.

In other words, if he rats out whoever it was in the Hillary campaign who leaked the emails.

Assange all but admitted it was Seth Rich.

Plus, the speed of the download meant it had to be to a machine local to the LAN.

It would have taken days to download that much data over the Interwebs.

I’ve had very ambivalent feelings about Assange from the beginning. I’m more willing to believe Trump & Rohrabacker on this. If Assange’s lawyers are willing to lie when the Russia collusion stuff is already off the table, then there goes my willingness to cut him some slack.

In 1866, the Supreme Court ruled in Ex parte Garland that the pardon power “extends to every offence known to the law, and may be exercised at any time after its commission, either before legal proceedings are taken, or during their pendency, or after conviction and judgment.” (In that case, a former Confederate senator successfully petitioned the court to uphold a pardon that prevented him from being disbarred.) Generally speaking, once an act has been committed, the president can issue a pardon at any time—regardless of whether charges have even been filed.

Didn’t Ford pardon Nixon, even though he was never convicted?

Assange stated that Russia was not involved, in an interview with Hannity quite a while back.

This is all Dem propaganda.

If Assange again states that Russia was not involved, the Dems will scream “Cover Up!”

If he says it was Seth Rich who gave him the information, they again will scream “Cover Up!”

Nothing changes. It’s all propaganda. It’s Russia, Russia, Russia. All the time their trying to force Socialism on our nation and destroy our Republic.

Assange said 2 years ago publicly that Russia was not the source of the emails.

Sorry about the source. It was the quickest I could find.

I actually don't believe it. But I don't trust a person who committed espionage against my country. Apparently you are okay with espionage against the United States.

How many U.S. citizens or assets were killed because of this guy?

You have no idea if he's an agent of Russia or some other country, do you. We do know he committed serious espionage against my country. The fact that you think that is a plus makes me wonder what agenda you have.

If I remember correctly, he was convicted in the house, but he never gave the house a chance to vote on it to have charges filed to the Senate. That was because because the wimp RINOs in the Senate gave up in Nixon.
