U.S. officials have confirmed to Fox News Thursday that a U.S. Navy warship intercepted Iranian-made weapons from a vessel in the Arabian Sea earlier this week.

Crew members from the USS Normandy seized a huge cache of weapons from a dhow – a small vessel with lateen sails – on Sunday while conducting maritime security operations in the U.S. Central area of operations.

The weapons and weapon components were intended for the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, according to officials.

It’s a dhow. What is a dhow? A dhow is a small vessel with lateen sails. What the heck is lateen sails and how does that help me understand what a dhow is? I never heard of a dhow and I never heard of lateen sails.

It’s a small fishing boat you see all the time in the gulf. Think smugglers.....

CG-60, a nearly 300 yard long ship, with 2 helos, coming at you at 35 knots would give you pause.

I wonder if they had humint from Iran assets.

This also happened a few hours after the Senate passed their war powers resolution.

“It’s a dhow. What is a dhow?”

Invented by a Mr. Dhow and his partner Mr. Jhones. A couple of average guys.

In the local fruit market they analyzed prices and put out a daily report on the averages. The Dhow-Jhones Average, they called it.

Dhows are the trading vessel sailing between the trading centers of the Gulf, Persia, West India and Africa. Dhows are among the oldest trading vessels in existence having been in use for ever.

Lateen sails are triangular as opposed to rectangular or square. They are quite flexible in use

They build them 3 or 4 times larger than the boat in your picture.

It's nice to know that the dhow (there are a number of a different types, I like to think I'm not the only one who grew up reading National Geographic) hasn't been utterly replaced by powerboats. This is an interesting stealthy way of moving terrorist materiel; in the Sinai, I suspect Iran's terrorist proxies get their deliveries via sub, but could be way off.
