Roar of the crowd: Trib readers recoil in horror at more I-35 construction projects
The Waco Tribune-Herald ^ | January 20, 2020 | The Waco Tribune-Herald

The strain is showing, and pretty early into construction along Interstate 35 through Waco. Some readers on the Trib Facebook page began to crack upon learning Waco-area transportation leaders last week approved $76 million worth of work to I-35 near New Road with hopes of finishing in 2023, around the same time larger I-35 reconstruction wraps up to the north. The Waco Metropolitan Planning Organization policy board approved the work, including new ramps, frontage roads and overpasses at Valley Mills Drive and New Road, as part of a long-range plan called Connections 2045. The improvements, divided between two $38 million projects, seek to relieve growing safety and rush-hour congestion issues at I-35 and its crossings in South Waco, especially at New Road. The reaction of at least some of our readers:

Kristi DuBois Byrd: I think everybody on the transportation policy board needs some A.D.D. medicine because they can’t seem to finish one thing without starting another. This whole city is going to look like a big Tonka truck convention at Armageddon.

Magdalena Macias: Can some of that $75 million go to my gas for having to drive 20 miles around the construction mess?

Eric S. Billings: Ah, yes, let’s keep piling up projects and screw up even more roads. Love it!

Kimberly Ann Uptmor: But did they have to tear everything up within a 2-mile radius of the interstate at the same time? I HATE WACO right now.

Madison Brooke Ohler: Yes, they did. TxDoT has been planning this project for over 10 years. There are reasons for everything they are doing. Yes, it would be easier for us if they did smaller segments, but there’s a reason for the madness.

Robert W. Stahr: If you don’t believe things can last forever, you’ve never seen I-35 construction.

That’s why I used the Chisholm Trail Parkway when I went to the FReeper Texas Memorial Shoot. I knew I-35 was going to be unpleasant.

Those people complaining have never seen the never-ending construction projects around Chicago!

That is more than the budget for all oklahoma projects. Not really but a lot of it.

Actually i hate to see ODOT get road money because they do such a lousy job of it. Just wasted. They have no idea how to build roads or they are too corrupt to do it right.

At least TXDOT builds decent roads.

Those people complaining will hopefully complain for decades as Waco is forced to pay the money it owes instead of building new stuff.

I’ve seen road projects that started over 40 years ago and that are still continuing to this day.

Here, in Broussard, La adding one lane to each side of a four-lane railroad overpass along with building another six-lane overpass took seven years to complete. The Golden Gate Bridge only took 3 1/2 years in the 1930’s. The 24 mile long bridge over Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans was completed in four years in the late 1950’s. They demolished the existing railroad overpass to build an entirely new one which, in my opinion was totally an overkill designed to increase the work.

US population has doubled since my birth. A new estimate of Illegals puts US’ population at 33 million “richer”.

With a 10% increase in population, we got to accommodate them somehow...

On the next ballot: "New roads and repair of old roads - YES - NO"

They will bitch no matter the outcome. At least they can work on roads most of the year. It's more fun to build roads when there's a foot of snow and/or it's 10 below.

Texas made a big mistake when it killed the Trans-Texas Corridor project. The I-35 right of way can be expanded so far. TTC should be revisited, passed, start taking bids. Need to “get’er done”...
