NEW YORK Deborah A. Batts, the nations first openly gay federal judge, has died. She was 72.
Batts was found dead on Monday, three months before she was set to preside over a trial of California lawyer Michael Avenatti on charges that he cheated porn star Stormy Daniels, a former client, of proceeds of a book deal. No cause of death was immediately released.
In June 1994, Batts was sworn in after a smooth confirmation process following her appointment to the bench by President Bill Clinton. During her confirmation proceedings, it was never mentioned that she was a lesbian.

But, at that time, she told the New York Law Journal that she did not want to be known as the gay judge.
Im a mother, Im an African American. Im a lesbian, she said.
Deborah Batts was a trailblazer in every respect: an openly gay African-American woman who became a United States District Judge after a distinguished career as a federal prosecutor and law professor, Chief Judge Colleen McMahon said in a statement. It will be difficult to replace her. Our hearts are broken at her premature passing.
McMahon said one of the judges greatest contributions to the court was her last, when she provided oversight to a unique program that enabled people convicted of crimes to earn reductions in their period of supervised release by participating in a special rehabilitative program under intense judicial supervision.

joking aside, this is very good news. It gets rid of a hard-left partisan Clinton hack on the NY southern district court (Manhatten) which is a cesspool of leftists.
The court has 15 Obama appointed judges, 4 clinton judges, 3 Bush, and 2 Trump appointees with 4 vacancies that Trump can fill with the best that Schumer/Gillibrand will return blue slips for.
She was a senior judge so Trump doesnt get to replace her BUT at least we get rid of 1 more hard-left judge on the bench instead of letting them pollute our country with their "rulings"
Mitch needs to nuke the blue slip rule.
“No cause of death was immediately released.”
All gerbils accounted for?

>> She was 72
Too young these days.
>> an openly gay African-American woman
Arbitrary characteristics, and certainly not an automatic badge of honor.
FWIW, don’t assume the qualities of the average Trump supporter.
an openly gay African-American woman , the only primary thing that is important to them
Another involuntary assisted suicide?
I liked Ramcharger best among these.
I knew Judge Batts when I worked at the US Courthouse. Personally she was a very nice lady and respectful of the older judge that I worked for. May she rest in peace.
I have the 79.
Thank you for your insight.
Suffocated by muff.
Clinton giveth and Clinton taketh away.
Great to hear from someone who actually knew her.
No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend’s were.
Each man’s death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.
She was lucky to escape association of her name with Avenetti.

"... she made her blazing gavel a torch to light the way!!!!"
