I know there are a lot of cynical people here who have given up doing anything about anything beyond posting messages on the Internet, but seeing what is happening in China and how fast this virus is spreading, we should all try to do our part, even if we risk overreacting a bit.

This pandemic has the potential to kill 2% of Americans and, as Americans, we should be willing to do at least the minimum to help our country and fellow citizens by helping to limit the spread of this virus.

It is not enough to say it can become spread without symptoms (even though there is little credible proof of that and the only official study showing that has proven to be flawed) so we are helpless and cannot do anything.

Yes, it has only been a month since we even heard of the Coronavirus and no one is sure of the facts, but it is clear from what we are seeing in China that something very serious could be happening. Official health organizations are calling it an emergency.

If there are simple things we, as Americans, can to do to protect this country, we should pull together and do them. We don’t want to panic, but so what if we are over-cautious and overreact a little?

Again, I think people who get minimal symptoms of flu or cold should try to isolate themselves from the public and from others in their household. This is just common sense.

If you have symptoms here are some common sense things you can do:

-if the symptoms are severe enough or last more than a few days go in and have it checked

-stay home

-if you must leave your home, wear a mask

-if living with others, restrict yourself to a separated area. Wearing a mask might help protect them

-if others must interact with you or get in proximity, they should wear a mask and safety glasses and wash their hands afterwards.

It is probably too early for the general population without symptoms to avoid getting out to public spaces, but everyone can do the usual things recommended to avoid the spread of flu and colds: sneeze into tissues, wag your hands a lot, avoid touching your mouth and nose, etc.

These are just my uneducated thoughts — and could be misguided — but it is more than we are getting from the authorities. I think even doing the simple things might be able to significantly help contain the viirus in the United States.

This could be an overreaction, but we can all help each other — and the country — by doing what we can to limit the spread of a potentially very dangerous virus. If we are serious about putting America first, then we should each do what we can to fight this threat to America . It is unlikely, but we could still end up like China, or worse.

Right now, there is no need to panic, but let’s do what we can, while we can, to keep it from getting out of hand.

.

Some common sense can help for sure, but considering how selfish and thoughtless so many people are cause they *have their rights*, I’m not so hopeful.

More than that have been lost.

Current estimates are that pork production in China is gone.

And now they have a bird flu outbreak that is destroying their chicken and fowl production.

There’s only been one fatality outside of China and he was 44.

OK, Boomer.

Really dude? You went there? I expect that from the dweebs on Facebook but not here.

Normally my response to that would be "you betcha snowflake" but somehow I don't think you're quite to snowflake status yet.

I'm not familiar with the case. Where was he and was he immune compromised at all or is that known? Without knowing much more about the patient; it would be hard to say why he succumbed to this virus. Some people simply don't take care of themselves so they are in generally poor health. That would also be a high risk person.

This is the best I can do with a cursory search:

The victim was a 44-year-old male Chinese national, who died on February 1. He was the companion of a 38-year-old Chinese woman, who arrived in the Philippines from Wuhan on January 21 after travelling through Hong Kong.

Over the course of the patient’s admission, he developed severe pneumonia, the Philippines’ Department of Health said.

The 2% number is based on current infection rates and not on the date contracted. Going back eleven (11) days will provide a better SWAG. These are Chicom numbers. All figures have been grossly underreported due to lack of capacity and testing.

The 25% case rate requiring advanced medical support is probably the best proxy. In Hubei there are now 2,143 serious and critical patients.

The US does not have that excess hospital capacity to treat. If you decide to contract the coronavirus, do it early.

I read various sources that said most flu strains can be transmitted 24 hours before symptoms, and SARS was 48 hours. Both can also survive about 24 hours on a hard surface - or longer.

RummyChick:

FReeper @blueplum posted the following on another thread; note he includes sources.

Thanks, @blueplum!

Age range is changing. From older, male, and/or male pre-existing, to toddlers. In a reddit article of jan 24, a 36yo was claimed to be ‘the youngest’.
The Malaysia cases are changing that: 22, then 11 and 2.

Malaysian man 22yo - Indian national (one report says 23yo) died 29Jan. From India, had moved to Malaysia 2 yrs ago. (caught the virus in Malaysia? did he visit China?)

Malaysia cases:
40yo man from Wuhan part of tour group who fell ill in Johor. Tour group traveled from Singapore to Johor.
66-yo man, Chinese national, fell ill in Singapore
65-yo woman, Chinese national, wife of 66yo, fell ill Kalua Lampur (Johor)
11-yo and 2-yo, Chinese nationals, grandsons of the above, fell ill Kalua Lampur (Johor)

“Right now, there is no need to panic, but let’s do what we can, while we can, to keep it from getting out of hand.”

I have a bunch on masks and gloves on hand anyway. Got my food stocked up a bit more last week along with cleaning supplies. Bought some stuff on the internet.

Will get some more stuff at the store this week.

Just like with the masks, being prepared ahead of time means others have a better chance later of getting something, and one isn’t adding to the problem.

Numbers are important to create fear so people will roll up their sleeves and pharmaceutical companies can get mega tax dollars and money off your dinner table.
Truth is much more important than numbers.
The advancements in bioengeneering should be enough to require truth.
A direct death from the flu is more significant that a death from pneumonia after hecing the flu.
We should also ask for the exact age data. There are limits on how long a person should expect to live.

people can be infected by someone passing gas. How have they documented that?

There’s a post on FR that mentions this as being documented during a SARS outbreak with 62 people being contaminated by the ‘plume’ ...

Note on masks - they are only good for 4 hours - then you need to put on a fresh one, while removing the old one without contaminating yourself. Do nor wash and reuse = worthless

Most masks are generally just good at keeping you from touching your face then there is the choice of goggles ...

The 2% rate is based on released CCP data and is worthless

see video where a Chinese guy walks up to clinic that has 8 bodies in a van then into the clinic where in the few seconds he is there 2 patients die ...
