A special election Tuesday for a seat in the Texas state House is being closely watched for early glimpses into just how competitive the delegate-rich state might be in the presidential election — and how critical suburban voters might trend in November.
Democrat Eliz Markowitz, an education specialist, faces Republican Gary Gates, a self-funded businessman, in Tuesday’s runoff to replace Rep. John Zerwas, a moderate Republican who is not running for re-election.
Markowitz, the only Democrat in the race, won 39.1 percent of the vote in the November election. Gates received 28.4 percent, while three other Republicans split the remainder of the vote.
The legislative stakes of the runoff in House District 28, a rapidly diversifying suburb of Houston, are relatively low. Whoever wins will most likely not even cast a single vote before they have to face re-election in November, as the Legislature does not meet this year. And even if Markowitz wins, Texas Republicans would still control the House by eight seats.
But Democrats are itching to demonstrate that Texas is a competitive state and will be up for grabs in 2020. Texas has 38 votes in the Electoral College, second to only California, with 55. Many say that demographic changes in the district, part of ethnically diverse Fort Bend County, are part of a larger shift in suburbs around the state — trends that could shift electoral results in Democrats' favor.

What they appear to leave out of the article is that the 4 Republicans totaled 1.5 times what the Dim did in the primaries.
Living in Texas I can tell you TEXAS IS IN REAL DANGER OF TURNING BLUE!!! Mock all you want but we have been inundated with many socialist immigrants leaving blue cities and the overwhelming illegals coming over with their socialist voting habits! We are drowning folks!! The rats are 9 seats away from flipping the state house blue! And when that happens you can bet your butts that we will have OPEN borders and our guns will be confiscated! Along with automatically making illegals that cross our border American citizens without penalty or fines, ...they will automatically be added to the register roll for the sole purpose of keeping Texas blue from here to kingdom come! SCARY CHIT ..YEAH!!! The open border crap scares the beeJeebies out of me! That’s all I’m saying!

Education specialist. Is that someone who teaches kids how to put condoms on cucumbers and that you can be a boy or a girl or whatever you want, and that white people should be ashamed of their race? Should go over well in Texas. It is going to take massive turnout to beat Democrats this year.

It will be interesting to see what happens. There was a lot of talk about the Democrat sweep of Fort Bend County in the 2018 elections, which was also the deciding factor in the Democrat sweep of the 1st and 14th Court of Appeals elections, but even the Democrats who won those elections largely credit Beto O’Rourke’s spending. That is not likely to be as much of an issue this time but, still, Democrats winning Fort Bend County would have been unthinkable only a few years ago.
The Democrats are committed to turning Texas blue. A lot of Freepers from more rural parts of Texas scoff at the notion, but they shouldn’t. Texas is largely an urban and suburban state, population-wise. The Democrats have firm control of the major cities now, and are now working hard on the suburbs.
Unfortunately, the state and local Republican parties seem to have almost no energy. Statewide, they seem to be complacent in their belief that rural Texas will continue to hand them statewide elections without effort. In Houston, at least, the local Republican party seems to be resigned to losing all city and county-wide elections for the foreseeable future. Not only has Harris County has gone from mostly Republican county-wide office holders to all Democrat in the span of about six years, but most potential Republican candidates I’ve spoken to have absolutely no interest in running for county-wide elections in 2020.
I agree that Texas is the real battle ground. I think Texas is in real danger.

The Democrats have no path to victory in Texas.
We’ll keep it red for now but in 2024 I believe in heart Texas will flip blue! I really do! Hopefully I’ll be dead by then! I cry for my grandchildren and future generations IF America is still around! Come quickly lord Jesus!

Isn’t this is a general election ? Where the winners of a political party primary face each other .Not a California style election where a half dozen candidates from the same party face only one pervorat
The primary occurred already. The way the results were listed, it appears all the candidates were in one pool, and the top two moved on. I can post the link in a bit.
Texas or I guess any State bordering another country has more jurisdiction over it’s border than the Federal gov’t?

Look at how far they have reached....they’ll try every dirty trick in the book to get their way and most times they do! Ahhh look at VA the only thing lacking in that state is a border!
Sure I get what you are saying but control of an international is always by the Federal Government rather than the State.

I agree. I’m in Rep. John Carter’s district and he won reelection but it was much too close. The Dem’s hand picked a female veteran who was like the pied piper to suburban women voters.
Unless we field strong candidates and fight, the blue enclaves will spread like a cancer over the Lone Star state.
I moved from Virginia and it was obvious what was going on.
