Since 1969, "Virginia Is for Lovers" has been the tourism and travel slogan of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Advertising Age called it "one of the most iconic ad campaigns in the past 50 years."
But the Virginia of 2020 seems to be another country than the friendly commonwealth to which this writer moved four decades ago.

Tearing down a statue of Robert E. Lee for the sake of political correctness is bad enough, but replacing it with the statue of a mass murderer and a terrorist like Nat Turner is a disgrace. Even if you believe Lee's cause was wrong, the General was regarded by friend and foe alike as an honorable man and a soldier's soldier. He only was responsible for the deaths of armed men on the battle field. In contrast, Nat Turner and his gang were sadistic murderers, indiscriminately slaughtering any white men, women, or children they could get their hands on. What's next on the agenda? A statue in honor of Micah Xavier Johnson in our nation's capital?

The problem with Virginia is the same as it is in all other states, the large metropolitan areas are heavy libtards while rural areas are conservative.

That’s part of the problem. The other part of the problem is that many “conservatives” are willing to prove their political correctness bona fides by siding with the Left’s campaign against the Confederacy or against any historical figure who can be tarred with the “racisms” brush, knowing full well that if Robert E. Lee has to go today to make room for Nat Turner, then George Washington will have to go tomorrow to make room for Mumia Abu-Jamal.
I think that the liberal elite’s vision of America’s future is one where our major cities look like a slum in Zimbabwe while their outskirts look like slums in Mexico or Guatemala. How the liberal elites themselves expect to thrive in such a society is something they haven’t thought through very much.
I do believe that Virginia will end up splitting in two.
A lot of Europeans and Asians who only know about the US from our movies and TV shows are shocked to find out that this isn't so when they actually visit the US for the first time.
Red state/blue state is a myth. Big cities in Texas are more liberal than small towns in upstate New York or in central Pennsylvania.

I’d like to see the conservative counties join with West Virginia, and the remainder can be a New Jersey-sized liberal shithole.
Except there is too much sentiment for the great historic tradition of Virginia, summed up in the term “the Old Dominion State.”
It would be hard for these to give up “the Old Dominion” to join with West Virginia.
I’m not from Virginia, just an outsiders opinion. I have long been an admirer of its historic tradition...dating all the way back to George Washington, Jeffeerson, etc.

Welcome to a Virginia controlled by Democrats. Where babies can be “aborted” after birth and criminals can have any gun they want but law abiding citizens must turn theirs in or register them.
We purchased our first home in Dale City VA. It was brand new in 1975 in a racially mixed neighborhood. It was a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath split level. Recently I looked it up and found that in 2011 someone added 5 bedrooms and one bath. They built a second story on the one story level, on both ends and out the back of the house. On the street view of the house, it showed 6 cars and a pickup truck parked on and in front of the property. I checked the local elementary school and it is now 63% Hispanic. I mentioned this to family at a holiday gathering and was judged for being racist.

At this point Virginia and West Virginia have completely different identities. It would be a doomed marriage.
Better to let the southern, rural counties keep the name Virginia and let the few blue counties go their own way.
We’ll keep our flag, motto, statues and heritage.
They can put up statues of Lenin, Stalin, Mao and Nat (murdering scum) Turner if they like.
When I was 7, my family moved to Maryland from New Jersey and I had to do a report on an Afro-American hero, and I was assigned nat turner. The encyclopedia entry was short...
Nat turner led a slave revolt killing 66 people, men, women and children, while they slept.
It was hard for me to accept any heroes after that.

Virginia and West Virginia were so different 160 years ago; that was why West Virginia agitated to leave initially.
