‘So wrong in so many ways” is how Gordon Wood, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian of the American Revolution, characterized the New York Times’s “1619 Project.” James McPherson, dean of Civil War historians and another Pulitzer winner, said the Times presented an “unbalanced, one-sided account” that “left most of the history out.” Even more surprising than the criticism from these generally liberal historians was where the interviews appeared: on the World Socialist Web Site, run by the Trotskyist Socialist Equality Party.
The “1619 Project” was launched in August with a 100-page spread in the Times’s Sunday magazine. It intends to “reframe the country’s history” by crossing out 1776 as America’s founding date and substituting 1619, the year 20 or so African slaves were brought to Jamestown, Va. The project has been celebrated up and down the liberal establishment, praised by Sen. Kamala Harris and Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

How about the silly little fact that the Declaration of Independence laid the societal framework that inexorably led to equality of human beings being recognized as the true and just human condition. It was done by a bunch of Christian and Jewish white males of western European, mainly from Britain, Scotland and Ireland who had the intellectual honesty and courage to decry 6000 years of recorded governments as being established on a false premise of where power devolved from. People aren’t the property of the governing, the governing exist at the sufferance of the people. This is the basis of America. Slavery existed long before America. It is narcissism of the highest order to believe that the arrival of a Dutch ship carrying slaves founded this country. If you believe this, You should then change the date to the founding of St. Augustine, for the Spanish colonies in Florida and Mexico had slaves long before Virginia. Of course the oldest slave descendants in America would be the Jewish settlers, because they were enslaved in Egypt long before slaves were sold to Europeans by Africans. However, back to my main point...

I was just visiting Lithuania. There, the Russians have initiated a misinformation campaign to frame Lithuanian freedom fighters as Nazi collaborators and sympathizers. Of course, there were Nazi sympathizers there during ww2, just as there were in America, but it’s not like opposing communism is the same as being a Nazi just because they had different sides in the war. Those Russians are evil to this day.

Actually, chattel slavery came with the English. Chattel slavery is one where the slave is just a possession with no human rights. Spanish slavery was sort of long-term indentured servitude, where the slave could earn money, buy his freedom, marry, attend religious services and be baptized. When African slaves escaped from the English slave owners, they were free if they could get across the border into Spanish Florida. They had to become Spanish citizens and be baptized once they got to Florida.
The Spanish had been forbidden by both the Pope and Queen Isabella to enslave the Indians, whereas the British took many Indians as slaves and sent them off to the sugar mills in the British Caribbean.
Jefferson and others of the writers of the Constitution were very bothered by the existence of slavery in the English speaking area of the US, but they just didn’t feel they could forbid it or even free their own slaves. He had introduced a section dealing with the slave trade into the draft of the Constitution but it was rejected by the representatives.

It is a 1910 book describing the horrendous treatment of slaves under Diaz in Mexico. Yes, 1910 not 1619 or 1776.
And please do not feed me textbook crap on the enlightenment of Spanish slave owners. Spain exploited the people they conquered in the New World like no other country did. Then they imported African slaves on top of that. Portugal was also a major abuser in the slave trade, with an incredible consumption, as in use them up by working them to the death in the mines and swamps of Brazil. But the Spanish method of using God as a justification for enslaving “savages” to save their souls was truly evil. That justified doing anything. Like burning every book the Mayans wrote.
Remember that throughout most of mankind’s history, slavery was a societal norm. The Vedic texts, the Old testament, and the Koran mention slavery without calling for it’s abolition.
The world had screwed up morals for thousands of years. It was the the revolutionist men of the British colonies of America who decided to break that cycle.
Here are the words America was founded on in 1776,
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
What a concept, all people are equal and have rights which are organic to their existence. Government doesn’t give people rights. They are part of the natural state of humanity. Revolutionary!!!

It is my understanding that her slave owning ancestors owned Irish slaves.
