SYRIA'S ASSAD SAYS THE U.S. IS WORKING WITH 'TERRORISTS' AND SELLING OIL STOLEN FROM THE COUNTRY
Newsweek ^ | December 16, 2019 | David Brennan

Posted on 12/17/2019 12:15:18 PM PST by NorseViking

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has accused U.S. forces of stealing the country's oil and working with terrorists to maintain their positions there, as he tries to restore his authoritarian rule over the war-torn nation.

Assad—who is backed by Russia and Iran—told state news agency SANA that Syrians must unite to make America's position in the country untenable.

It has been a turbulent end to 2019 for U.S. forces in Syria. There were some 2,000 soldiers stationed in the country until October, when President Donald Trump abruptly ordered American troops out of position in the northeast of the country, where they were deployed alongside allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

This facilitated a Turkish invasion of the area, with many U.S. forces ordered to retreat into Iraq. The Trump administration has since said it will retain a small American force in the east of the country to guard the oil wells there, thought to be around 500 soldiers backed by armored vehicles.

The official logic behind the plan is to deny Islamic State remnants access to the potentially lucrative wells. However, Trump himself has said he would like to bring in U.S. companies to work the fields.

Assad—who has repeatedly criticized and mocked America's erratic Syria strategy—claimed in his SANA interview that the U.S. is extracting oil from the fields and selling it to Turkey.

As if! LOL. I got more oil and gas on my property than Syria can produce in a year. Heck, states like Ohio have more oil and natural gas then Syria can ever hope to produce.

There is some truth to it. The operation they are talking about is rather low scale. I doubt US is getting any.

Assad, whose government has never met a terrorist group it doesn’t like, is calling the US a terror sponsor? Bwahahaha. This is not a comprehensive list, but Assad has sponsored the following terror groups - PLO, PFLP, Hamas, Hezbollah, DFLP, Amal, et al. Meanwhile, Uncle Sam is helping the Kurds keep a small slice of Syria. But it’s typical that Assad would consider Kurds a terrorist group. He probably considers Americans a terrorist group.

Well we know ISIS was doing it until Russia made a stink about it.

Looks like somebody has restarted it. Question is who.

[Assad—who is backed by Russia and Iran]

This was the case at one time. Things are so complicated over there now (thanks Barack and Hillary and McCain).

Wouldn’t surprise me to see Syria part of Ezekiel 38.

I guess time will tell.

Some truth.
Kurds sell it to whomever is a “good” customer.
That wouldn’t include Turkey and it’s proxies though.
But in the NE, strange things happen.

Big accomplishment of holding the oil is keeping tankers from being used for smuggling terrorists and arms.
]Those tanker compartments have held a lot besides oil.

Assad wants a united Syria he needs merely be more generous to the Kurds.

Like murder, there’s no statute of limitation on terror sponsorship. It’s the same regime. While I sympathize with the plight of the Alawites, the way I sympathize with the plight of poor black murderers, they are still accountable for their crimes. Frankly, the Alawites could kill every single Sunni Arab, and I’d cheer them on. And vice versa. The fact is they were culpable in the deaths of 200 Marines in Lebanon via their sponsorship of Hezbollah.

Your contention is that McCain knowingly allied with jihadists. I have serious doubts, knowing how prissy he was with this kind of stuff. A simpler explanation is that the CIA was incompetent* at acquiring human intelligence, the way it almost always is, which is why just about every significant CIA source consists of walk-ins, rather than people carefully cultivated by CIA case officers on assignment abroad. As usual, the CIA people on the ground in Syria couldn’t tell a jihadist from a hole in the ground.

But let’s say your contention, that McCain knowingly allied with jihadists in trying to have Assad killed, is correct. So what? If we went into alliance with the Soviet Union, which helped Hitler kick off WWII, killing 500,000 Americans, we can use jihadists to whack Assad. What else are jihadists good for, except landfill fodder?

* If loyalty weren’t an issue, we could probably do better by recruiting/headhunting the staff of the Chinese and Russian intelligence services and firing the entire staff of the existing CIA.

Because Americans had no interest in killing Assad at all. Not one.

What statute of limitation you are talking about? How old Assad was when Marines were bombed?
As for McCain and ISIS terrorists incompetence of CIA is not an excuse. The politician at high office needs to have better judgment. The fact on the ground is that a US Senator McCain plotted with ISIS chief and Al-Qaeda operatives the overthrow of UN-recognized legitimate Syrian government.
US didn’t declare war on Syria.
