Lawmakers release defense bill with parental leave-for-Space-Force deal

House and Senate negotiators on Monday released an agreement for the massive annual defense policy bill that would give federal workers 12 weeks of paid parental leave in exchange for creating President Trump’s long-sought Space Force.

The $738 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) covers everything from how many planes and ships the military can buy to reforming privatized military housing.

News broke Friday night that this year’s bill – the result of months of negotiation between the Democratic-led House, Republican-led Senate and the White House – also includes a historic deal to provide paid parental leave to all federal employees.

“This conference report is the product of months of hard-fought, but always civil and ultimately productive, negotiations,” the bipartisan leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees said in a joint statement Monday.

“The NDAA remains one of the few authorizations bills that Congress passes year after year,” they added. “That is because both houses of Congress and both parties, recognize its importance and work together to support the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, and to provide them with the resources, equipment, training and policy needed to protect our nation.”

The House is expected to vote as soon as Wednesday on the compromise bill.

Everything should stand on it's own. We shouldn't be held hostage to passing a bill by bribing someone with unrelated pet projects to get the deal passed and increasing costs exponentially.

Is this IN ADDITION TO regular vacation time?

I sure hope this is not going to go with yet another pay raise for the federal government civilian employees. Absolutely DISGUSTING!

Space Force to be under the Air Force, like the Marine Corps is under the Navy, but they will get a seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. All the billets come out of Air Force.

Apparently, there will be no language about the border wall, so the the President can re-program some funds into the counter-narcotic account again in 2020 for barrier, but i would not count those chickens until they are hatched.

This bill must be vetoed. Absolutely awful to make taxpayers pay for more freebies for the dead beat federal “workers”.

Federal” workers” are the true welfare parasites whose livelihoods are extorted from the taxpayer. Federal “workers” contribute nothing to the economy because their paychecks come from their neighbors who work real jobs that contribute to the economy. A federal “worker” lives in a house, pays their visa bills, grocery bills by sucking off the taxpayer. ......Military, first responders excluded.

Just another payoff to the homo lobby.

I believe that all parents already get 6 weeks off but this expands the coverage and length.

QUESTIONS...

How many federal temp workers would be needed to fill-in for the federal workers? Would the federal temp workers be eligible for 12 weeks paid parental leave as well?

BOTTOM LINE: “We the People” will foot the bill for this nonsense.

I demand 12 weeks of paid leave to look after my dog, who is my emotional support Westie. He deserves the additional time to enhance his quality of life. He is happiest when I am home with him. It’s only fair.

The President should drop the Space Force instead of falling for more Federal Employee welfare schemes.

Why on earth should a Federal Employee get more paid time off then someone working in the private sector? When will this end?

The President should Pursue the Space Force authorizations when the Republicans get the majorities in both houses of Congress.

I am a federal worker and i think this is ridiculous. I get 8 hours of vacation every paid period and 4 hours of sick leave. If someone wants time of for having children they should plan accordingly and save their leave and sick time.

I dont understand why someone should get free paid time off for something that for the most part can be planned for in advance, yet there is no extra paid time off for someone who gets cancer.

Women have absolutely zero reason to complain about equality at work. They get way more consideration and benefits than men.

Paid family leave also discriminates against single federal workers.

I agree with the posts which point out the downside of this tax paid gift to the army of federal workers. They already have a three day weekend for every national holiday, along with a generous pay, medical care, annual and sick leave package. All of this is paid for by tax payers who themselves will be working to pay for parental benefits which are not part of their employment benefits. Non govt employees will be working to pay for a category of workers of any sex who claim to fit the parameters outlined in this bill. A non govt employee will still be hiring help for their same circumstances. This is wrong.
