It isn’t illegal immigration that is suppressing wages (outside of some low-skill jobs); it is LEGAL immigration. Here in the NYC metro area (including northeastern NJ, where most of the state’s population lives) we are importing hordes of Asians to take middle-class white-collar jobs.
Whole housing developments built decades ago are now filled with Indians, working the jobs of, and living in the former homes of, unemployed Americans. A close friend in the Philly metro area describes the same thing happening there; this isn’t limited to the tech sector anymore. The Indian gas station owners and Quik-E-Mart operators are now the minority of Indians here; they are working in American office buildings in the financial sector and such.
Agreed that legal immigration is a big problem. But one of the surprises of the economic numbers is that wages for lower level jobs are rising. If not for illegal immigration, they would probably rise more.
You’re right; I believe employers are feeling pressure because there is just no reason for anyone (foreign or American) to even show up for the sh!t pay of McJobs - especially here in the northeast. Areas that aren’t even very nice are still expensive; working for $8/hour does little for anyone.
Trump is, dare I say, a WINNER!
Too poisonous to even line a birdcage ....
