And that’s a pain. Just like hand-wash clothes is.

Trust me - you cannot win with the EnvironMental religion. Not if they are honest.
I use Trader reusable bags too, and put paper bags inside them. These double bags last for a long time, not quite forever. The cashiers always thank me for bringing my bags. Have a pile in the trunk of my car. Just bought a new reusable bag from Kroger yesterday.
Also realize what the green really is - money.
This way, companies don’t have to spend money but YOU do. More service goes away by making you bring in a bad, along with Wal-Mart’s attitude of basically do-it-yourself so *we* don’t have to spend money.
My husband’s gym tried to pull this sanctimonious garbage. They told customers they were going towel-less to “help the environment”. BS. All they did was TRANSFER the enviro issue to the customer, while simultaneously making everything cheaper for themselves. No longer do THEY need washing machines and detergent (oops - bad for the enviro!) and electricity or even storage space. They’re just hoping you’ll do that on YOUR end.
Don’t give in one inch to these commie-red greenies.
My wife likes to use cloth bags due to the thinness of the plastic bag. She is able to wash those cloth bags also.
I remember the plastic bag sales pitch when I first work as a bag boy at Publics in the early 80s.
We are saving a tree by using plastic.
I think it was the Oil companies pushing plastics to drive up the price of oil.
I use paper when ever possible. I have a bad habit of forgetting my reusable bags in the car. If I felt like it, I would bag my stuff at my car. I just got sick of all of these bags.
I love the old grocery paper bags, BUT they don’t have the lovely handles on them.
Handles on a paper bag will add to the cost that stores won’t want to bear. It can’t be done w/o heavy-duty paper and staples. That’s extra manufacturing effort.
Enviros are idiots as well as tyrants.
They tell us to bring our own bags - which SHOULD be washed but THAT uses evil detergents and “wastes” water!
They CANNOT subtract from one issue w/o adding to another. They never learn.
Unless they really want stone-age living.
If the food is in a box or can the permanent bag is fine, but unwrapped food is a risk.
We do something to that effect for our frozen/refrigerated items. I got into the habit years ago of bringing along one or more coolers with Blue Ice. That allowed me to stop off at several stores when running errands and not worry about getting those perishable items back home right away. This has come in quite handy since our move to central Texas with the hotter weather months.
Reality is, is that in life, EVERYTHING is a tradeoff.
When you mind numbingly just dictate one thing is bad, no matter what, you short circuit true critical thought and discussion.
If you just declare, disposable plastic bags are bad, because they are plastic and one time use, you and that in your mind is the worst thing you can think of... then all the other criteria for critically thinking about the issue becomes naught...
The reusable bag is still plastic, but its reusable, so its better.... Well, unless you use it 132 times, its not, because it costs far more in terms of energy and raw materials to produce and transport, and its so much heavier, and its still plastic, so if it winds up in the landfill before its used 132 times, then it is not improving on the issue of plastic waste, or even “carbon footprint” but makes it worse.
So, if you go to the store every week, you need to use that same bag for over 2.5 years, before you benefit from it. Now, some people may, but I doubt highly most do... and that doesn’t even get into the health risks you introduce by using a reusable bag...
Paper bags are also biodegradable and paper pulp is a renewable resource.

I’d rather have multi-use paper bags without handles than easy-tear plastic, or reusable germ collectors.

Side rant: Those pushing efforts to ban plastic shopping bags often drive their point by showing our waterways and land polluted with these eeeevil bags. What bothers me is that there’s rarely ever mention of HOW the bags became pollution. I’d kindly offer that people are the commonality with pollution. The anti-plastic bag argument seems similar to the anti-gun argument - blaming an inanimate object instead of a person’s choice.
I hate pollution and LOVE being outdoors. But I never look at the random aluminum can of soda in woods and call for banning the soda cans. I’d rather call for a boot in the ass of the fool not picking up after themself!
About 15 years ago, laws were passed to include starch in the plastic used for bags. The starch is biodegradable and the plastic that is left is micro sized. The bags take about 2 years to degrade. It’s also the reason that when you hang a bag up in your garage with something in it, it becomes fragile and tears easily a year or two later.
