At the time you could order guns by mail, or go to most hardware stores or even some department stores. Guns were easily available.

My dad gave me my first shotgun when I was 11. He bought it at a hardware store.

For those who think a new law will prevent home made guns, google “Vietnam handmade guns”, then hit images and see how easy they are to make.

I used to have a photo of a handgun whose frame was hand filed out of a piece of railroad track.

Places I saw guns for sale before 1968...

Hardware stores, clothing stores, book stores, gas stations, sporting goods stores, grocery stores, bus stations, kitchen tables, and many many others, no bans on out of state buys. Cash and carry. No waiting period, no background check, no paperwork. Just look “old enough”.

Or, drop a check in the mail and order one out of the back of a magazine, shipped direct to you. You could even buy anti-tank rifles, and demilled full auto sub machine guns through the mail. A few strokes with a fire and you were in the rat-a-tat business again!
Over a hundred years ago, some newspapers even gave away pistols if you took out a yearly subscription to their newspapers.

The US was flooded with cheap guns, both army surplus and some real junk like the RG pistols.

Oh I miss those days!

There was a time when some guns were sold without any numbers on it at all. I used to have an old Springfield .22 with no numbers.

If the Government does not Register Firearms, every Gun is a Ghost Gun.

If they decide to Register Firearms, every Gun will be a Ghost Gun sooner or later.

Have they outlawed Human Ingenuity yet?

There were gun clubs in schools. Many schools had shooting ranges. In parts of the country during hunting season guns were brought to school so they could go hunting afterward.

Guns are not the problem.

Age 13 I made a zip gun (1958 ) With a door latch, rubber band, nail, carved wooden handle, a few screws. It worked—firing 22 longs. Inaccurate at 12 feet. A policeman took it away but complemented me on the extra safety features I added. Didn’t arrest me—just took it away. Another time.
