“”They weren’t looking for prostitution,””

There was so much that I disagreed with in the thread that I forgot to ask about that. Where on earth did the “looking for a prostitute” come from? Guess I should be directing my questions to the author....

I agree with what you’ve posted there. The same moribund U.S. economy that eroded public support for Nixon in 1974 also turned Gerald Ford into a half-term president and Jimmy Carter into a one-term president after Nixon left office.

Nixon’s greatest mistake in the whole Watergate scandal was committed one particular Saturday Night.

I believe Nixon's biggest mistake was forcing out his Attorney General Richard Kleindienst and replacing him with Elliot Richardson--an odd choice since Richardson was one of the liberal/left East Coast elitists whom Nixon had been battling sine the Alger Hiss case. Richard Kleindienst, a Barry Goldwater man, would never, ever have hired Archibald Cox, who was JFK's Solicitor General. But Richardson placed a Kennedy man in charge of an investigation into Nixon, the arch-enemy of the Kennedys.

I’m still not sure about that. I’m pretty sure the economy was just as bad during 1972 as well, yet that never stopped Nixon from easily winning reelection against McGovern.

I don’t doubt that Nixon was set up, but he was far from perfect. I don’t know much, but when he “opened China”, which, since I’m not a financial wiz or a billionaire, I can only guess how it changed world finances, I think he, unwittingly or not, made a deal with the devil. China (their government) is evil. I’m sure there are good ordinary people there, but when everything is sifted, I think everyone will see that China is truly evil.

never said I was a big fan of Nixon, I just said what they charged him with was bullshit- small potatoes compared to what his opposition was doing. He was indeed a globalist, and believed in top-down economies, (with the government being the top).... His biggest sin, so far as I’m concerned was normalizing relations with Red China....hard to downplay the repercussions of that.

2019 is NOT 1973 and the Libs do not control the news cycle to ner thje extent they did in the 70’s.

We also didn’t have a fighter in the WH like DJT. Trump says he is not a quitter and I believe him and do not expect he will quit now.

I don’t know about CIA, but before becoming a reporter he worked for the military and intercepted calls and reports from Kissinger. He denied that he had worked for Admiral Moorer - maybe even lied about being in the military. (It was a long time ago that I read the book).

The military hated Nixon as much as the left did. (Hmm - reminds me of today with all the deep state leftists in our military).

I thought it was Dean and/or Hunt that ordered the break in. Nixon didn’t know until after.

Gordon Liddy says it was to get rid of info since one of the prostitutes was dating Dean.

are you naive or what? “Now, that being said, it should have been a temporary agency that got closed down once it was all clear.” The closest thing to eternal life on this earth is a government program! No government program, let alone agency, has ever ceased operations because they succeeded, and especially not if they fail.

I'm not saying Americans hated Nixon in 1972. Clearly they didn't (though McGovern wasn't a great alternative). What I AM saying, is that if a Dem had imposed wage and price controls and created a runaway govt agency (I get that we "needed" the EPA, just like we "needed" DHS and the attendant erosion of privacy), we'd call him a socialist. But for some reason, probably out of a fear that they may give libs an inch, conservatives go to great lengths to defend Nixon when he was a milquetoast free marketer.

Good points. Similar to what the NAZIs did in Germany, creating a separate reality where Jews were less than human and deserving of every evil heaped upon them. Conservatives are the new German Jews...

Your way back machine doesn’t work today. Here is why
1. There was only 3 dominate media outlets. At the time they practiced real journalism and had a high level of trust. There are thousands of ways to get news now and the media has lied so much that their credibility is in the royal shitter. Without public trust, they can all get together and what do you have? A large group of liars.
2. Nixon ran away to China, rather than fight. He was not likable, and his tapes as well as the missing 13 minutes was enough to indicate a coverup. His popularity went into the toilet and the media destroyed him. Trump on the other hand fights. He belittles and humiliates his opponents. It pisses them off, but makes him enduring to the public, because they already knew these people were scum.
3. The democraps have nothing on him. They are openly trying to destroy him with every, and anything, and it’s numbing the public, thanks to the help of the media, and this does not go unnoticed by the public. Say what you will about the voting public, 2 things they loathe are liars and bully’s.
4. Trump gets results. The democraps and republicans give excuses.
5. Trump has an act 2, if he can get Barr off his fat ass and the stick out of Horowitz that proves massive corrupt from the DNC that will destroy them, and they know it. Thus the reason for this farce in the first place, its to stop Trump from revealing the truth.

So all Trump needs to do is let this farce continue. It humiliates the DNC and makes the media even less credible. When your opponent is hanging themselves, keep feeding them rope

Watergate was a Media Coup

And big media is the communications division for deep state. Deep state controls the news/communications. When the CIA destabilized or covertly aided in the process of destabilizing/overthrowing countries in the past, it always attempts to seize and or control the media. It's an essential part of the process.

There were a few times where presidents closed down government programs once they’re no longer of any use. Let’s not forget that Abraham Lincoln implemented the income tax during the Civil War, and that eventually got canned after the war was over (until Woodrow Wilson brought it back in permanently). Are you going to call Lincoln one of our worst presidents? And let’s not forget about the methods used during World War II regarding government programs and recycling. Those got cut after the war. If they can cut them, even temporarily, so can Nixon ultimately.

Obama pulled the electronic version of watergate on the trump campaign.

No problem there apparently.

Nixon never ran away to China. While it is indeed a shame that he did in fact ally with China, even that was specifically in a misguided attempt at destabilizing the USSR. Not to mention he did win us the Vietnam War. Also, I’m pretty sure if Nixon were truly not likeable, he would have at best barely won against McGovern and at worst lost against him, NOT won in a landslide.

But you are right about everything else.
