Michigan Moderates Sense Jitters on Medicare for All

The Democratic Party’s internal dispute over Medicare for All has reached this battleground state, and so far, supporters of a single-payer health care system are finding a tough audience.

Union members in this labor stronghold state have expressed unease with Medicare for All, fearing they would lose health benefits that were hard-won over years of negotiations.

A survey of 600 likely voters commissioned by the Detroit Regional Chamber this summer found that a majority opposed a Medicare for All proposal that would eliminate private health insurance, as proposed by Democratic presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

Kamala Harris, a lower-polling candidate, supports expanding access to Medicare, allowing a role for private insurers.

A poll released last week by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Cook Political Report had similar findings. Nearly two thirds of swing voters surveyed in Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin rated a Medicare for All plan that would eliminate private insurance as a “bad idea.”

Michigan illustrates the risk Democrats face in swing states. The policy appeals to Democrats’ liberal base but is less popular with moderates, polls show. And in key battleground states like this one, some moderate Democrats say they fear that a fierce debate over a government-run health care system could give Republicans ammunition to peel away votes.

“If you start talking to them about Canadian-style health care in my district, people…start to get a little nervous,” Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a freshman lawmaker who beat a Republican incumbent in 2018, said after a town hall Friday in Rochester Hills, a Detroit suburb. “People start saying, ‘Well, can I keep my doctor? And am I going to be forced into something that I don’t want?’”

She said those looming questions opened Democrats up to claims that they are backing socialist policies.

If Democrats can’t win MI, look for another four years for President Trump!

Looks like there are no takers for state run health care in the Wolverine State.

so...they’re not “moderates”.

They’re UAW hacks who believe that they are OWED a gold-plated health plan and don’t want to give it up under Lizzie’s grand design.

It’s MEDICAID/VA care for all...

Some democrats have figured out the scam - and THEY don’t want MEDICAID for all: forced to wait a month for a doctor’s appointment with a doctor who doesn’t speak english and can’t stand them...

Stop calling Slotkin a moderate. She talks a game, but is to the left of AOC when it is voting time.
