President Trump's decision to remove our troops from the Turkish border and seize control of oilfields in eastern Syria has resulted in a flurry of articles and TV appearances from numerous retired generals warning us how wrong Trump is. The retired generals are highly critical of Trump's skepticism of our post-9/11 wars and his approach to rouge nations like Iran and North Korea as well as his plans for dealing with Russia and China.

As a Viet Nam war combat vet (CIB) I too want to see an end to these endless wars. Bring our troops home.
I am not anti-war, just anti-endless wars that do not appear to resolve anything.
No criticism of the author’s content; but Newsweek apparently no longer hires editors and proofreaders.
“Endless war” has always been lefty talking point. ISIS needed killing and the number of military deaths in Syria was 6(!). It is not Vietnam.
6 soldiers died in Syria and ISIS has been nearly wiped out. It is very different from Viet Nam.
Amen. If after 17 years in Afghanistan it's still a mess, another 20 won't change things. Get out. Same with Iraq, Syria, and every other middle eastern hell hole. If they are bad enough to say we have to be there forever than they are bad enough to bomb to the stone age. Either way, we shouldn't be taking up a land-lord role.
AGREED. If the American Military is brought to bear it should be to WIN the situation Quickly and MASSIVELY.
Start THIS precedent, restore a healthy fear, and the mere threat will cause things to change.

As one who talked to a myriad of Vietnam vets returning from service in the late sixties I became aware that we were not fighting a war to win it. LBJ just fought the war to fight it. Nixon was forced by congress to also not fight the war to win it. We fought WW 2 to win and we won.
I swore to myself I would not be one of those put in harms to fight a war without an endgame.
We have lost our way.
There are more troops in Afghanistan today than when the President assumed office in 2017. We recently pulled around 50 soldiers out of Northern Syria (moved across the border to Iraq, not brought home), but we followed that up by commiting another 1,000 to protect the Syrian oil fields.
The real way to prevent the next 9-11 is to let our Saudi “friends” know in no uncertain terms that we’ve got them by the shorthairs.
I have to agree it is time to withdraw from places like Afghanistan. As one person said, after 17 years it will be no better than it is now in another 20 years.
Isis appears to have been eradicated for now. Staying in Syria does not look necessary.
The horn of Africa is as big a mess as ever though the Somali pirates seem to have been contained.
Iraq, just good bye. Bad investment.
The Saudis need to take care of themselves.
Middle East adventures with large deployments need to come to an end and be replaced with merciless surgical strikes as necessary.
Generals will just have to find some other sand box to play in for now. It will not be nearly so much fun as putting live rounds downrange but those are the breaks. I’m sure though it will not be all that long before some other despot raises a ruckus somewhere in the world. Probably China.

The intensity of combat is directly related to your proxomity, safe boy.
And you don’t get to crow about how we had to kill isis when we created it. That’s like one Mexican breaking into your house, and his brother coming by later to sell you bars for your windows.
You’re probably as safe as me and going all in with emotional “6 deaths isn’t little because even 1 is too much” is persuasive for mental children.
USA didn’t create ISIS, unless you count it as a result of Obama’s premature withdrawal, but you are arguing for another premature withdrawal here.

Those 6 soldiers are just as dead as the 58,000 and their families grieve no less. What a comparison to make.
Nope. Same issues. Vietnam was constantly resupplied from outside their area. Just like iraq, syria and other places in the me. There will always be resupplied fighters and provisions. It will always be endless unless there is/was a complete lockdown on a country.
It’s still 10,000 times less. Why wouldn’t that matter?
