Jesus, Porky Pig collect votes for North Irwin council
Tribune-Review (Suburban Pittsburgh) ^ | 7 November 2019 | Joe Napsha

Although he died some two millennia ago and there is no evidence he ever visited Westmoreland County, Jesus Christ garnered support Tuesday to serve on North Irwin council.

The 33 write-in ballots cast included single votes for Porky Pig, “My Left Foot” (the name of a 1989 film starring Daniel Day-Lewis), Somebody With A Brain and Jesus H. Christ — though the Bible never indicates that Jesus had a middle name.

But, just like the Bible, “Jesus H. Christ” will be marked down for posterity in the county’s election records, said Beth Lechman, director of the county’s election bureau.

Because none of North Irwin’s 531 voters — 240 Democrats and 225 Republicans — filed nominating papers to get on the ballot for any of three open seats, write-in votes were the only way someone could have won a council term.

It is nice to live in a county with a sense of humor and enough slow news days to publish articles like this.

Seriously, I won an election as the precinct election judge on write-in votes even though I wasn't running for the office.

That's the charm of Pennsylvania-- enough quaint little small towns and units of government that even somebody like me can get elected to something without even running for the office.

Although (H)e died some two millennia ago …
He also came back to life three days later, and is still alive. He is also coming back to rule the whole planet, and will not be elected.

And I guess people think that someone appreciates the extra work dealing with their nonsense.

I have a departed relative who used to be an elections official.

I remember he once told me that the 3 most frequently cast write-in votes in his county were for:

- Donald Duck
- Mickey Mouse

and...

- F*** You!

The “H” stands for Harold

From the Lords Prayer:

Our father who art in heaven, Harold be thy name.

I’ve seen all three of those or variants thereof on our precinct print-out tape at the end of the night. Sometimes, they give you a momentary chuckle, but usually, I am just too tired to do much more than finish the job properly and drive the results to the court house.

Voters are allowed to blow off steam in this way if they so choose. The amount of extra work it causes is minimal.

Which is much more than I can say about those who insist you should allow them to vote knowing full well that they aren't in your registration book and that Pennsylvania does not allow same day registration so (I won't say who but we all know) can load up roving vans full of voters and add to the drama. And similar behavior. I even had a ditz who finally admitted she was registered in another precinct but thought it would be more convenient to vote in ours.

I think it causes a lot more work than it’s worth just so somebody can giggle and write nonsense. Yes, they have the “right” to waste people’s time, just like when they balance their checkbook in the supermarket line.
