TALLAHASSEE — In light of Key West banning the sale of sunscreens that contain chemicals believed to harm coral reefs, Florida lawmakers are fast-tracking proposals that would undo the local regulation.
Sen. Rob Bradley, R-Fleming Island, said Monday that Key West is sending “mixed signals” to people about the importance of sunscreen and that his bill is meant to send a clear message to the “country and the world” that the use of sunscreen is encouraged in the Sunshine State.
“Unfortunately, with all of the wonderful things that come with our beaches and our sunshine, we also rank second in the nation for the highest rate of new melanoma cases,” said Bradley, who described sunscreen as the “first line of defense” against skin cancer.
Under Bradley’s bill (SB 172), which was approved Monday by the Senate Innovation, Industry and Technology Committee, the state would block local regulation of over-the-counter drugs and cosmetics, which would include all sunscreens. Regulation would be determined by the state.
If the “preemption” bill is approved by the Republican-dominated Legislature, Key West would not be able to enforce an ordinance banning the distribution of sunscreens containing the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate, which studies have found can contribute to coral bleaching.
The new rules are set to go into effect Jan. 1, 2021.
Attorney and lobbyist Jason Unger, representing Key West on Monday, urged the Senate panel to vote down the proposal, arguing the sunscreen ban is meant to protect coral reefs, which are essential to the city’s tourism-driven economy.

Is that length of sun exposure related, or is it the chemicals in the sunscreen?

Aruba has free sunscreen-dispensers at their beaches to protect their coral reefs.
I don’t have a huge problem with this.
Oil-based sunscreens really do degenerate the coral reefs and mess up sensitive places.
A few bucks more for organic sunscreens seems like a good investment to me. I have been making that investment for the last 10 years. It cost me all of $20 or $30 or so.
The science is quite real on this one. Thousands of swimmers with oils on their bodies really screw up the coral. I have seen it with my eyes.
Come on, FReepers — this is low hanging fruit where we can do our part.

You conflate AGW with the direct affect of sunscreen oils. The latter does have a direct and scientifically measurable affect on coral and other sea life. It is not climatics but the measurements are clear. When lazzai-faire MEXICO gets concerned then we need to take notice.. It is a few bucks to get the organic stuff. Make the tiny investment.
There is a credible case that certain chemicals in sunscreen are harmful to coral reefs. Unfortunately, the problem extends to a wide class of consumer and agricultural products and the wide-scale harm they cause to marine life.

Organic or not , this stuff screens the light from the coral when it creates a film on the water.
Well, is Miami still dumping raw sewage into the ocean - which was destroying the upper key reefs?
Its a dangerously false sense of security created by reduced pain thereby causing people to extend exposure time.
The problem is sunscreen coverage is never 100 percent. Those difficult parts of the body not covered by sunscreen end up being exposed far longer than if the person had no sunscreen and ceased exposure once doing so became painful.
Those difficult areas like eyelids, nostrils, scalp, etc get fried but because the total surface area is relatively small, the person doesn't get significant pain and cease exposure.
Ultimately, only one cell needs to mutate to kill a person.
Other issues are that large area application is not uniform and re-application is haphazard. Sunscreen wears off unevenly due to contact with clothing, towels, furniture, sand, water, etc.

People don’t use sunscreen properly and stay out in the sun. Liberals say to go outside. People do. Liberals then claim dangers from it.

Then point to a peer reviewed study that positively demonstrates sunscreen is affecting coral reefs.
The coral bleaching effect has been blamed on ‘global warming’, sun screen ingredients, ocean temperatures rising (which they actually haven’t), and other ‘man made’ issues.
There have been claims that the US has lost half its coral , which has yet to be proven, due to these man-made factors. All of which have been guesses and ‘studies’ not based on science but on liberal Luddite ideology that man and his machines are horrible for the planet.
No study has proven a correlation between man and coral. Feeble minds jump to illogical conclusions as they have on this issue. They might as well conclude the clouds cause the sun to rise in the east because the clouds in the morning come from the east.
There is scientific proof that the chemicals in most products cause damage to coral. Even sugar can do that. Coral is a very fragile ecosystem and even a reduction in nutrients in the water can cause coral bleaching, an effect where marine life in the coral dies so the coloration decreases, which returns coral to its natural white coloration.
Worldwide, there has been an increase in coral bleaching. That is the only fact that is provable by inspection of coral reefs. The liberal Luddites, however, lie about it and claim there are only reductions in areas where humans use sunscreen. Not true. Coral bleaching is being seen throughout the planet, even in remote places where humans have no activity. To blame coral bleaching on human activity is without scientific merit. The coral bleaching could be a bacterial infection across the oceans and a perfectly natural occurrence of nature.
More needs to be known, but we’ll never solve this riddle by first concluding man did it. We did the same thing with the ozone hole, blaming man and banning the chemical CFC. We banned the chemical CFC and the liberal Luddites shut up about the ozone hole which still remains. It never was man-made.

I have a 6 inch scar on my shoulder from the days I spent as a youth using “sunscreen.” It was a small mark -— about the size of my pinky fingernail.
Sun = BAD for you. The tans we got as kids come back to hurt us badly as adults.
